This could be the end of a long and lovely season. Or it could be the end of 17 years without a home playoff win or an NLCS appearance. There's nothing like a final series game to throw everything into stark contrast. It's going to be emotional.

If 167 games is all we get, then I've enjoyed spending this season with you. If it's not, I've still enjoyed spending the season with you. Either way, nothing is erased that came before.

In a roundabout and frustrating way, the Reds and Giants have only confirmed what we figured was true going in: these two teams are a pretty good match. It could have happened by trading wins. Or by a series of close games that broke evenly. Instead, it happened in this jarring and backwards way. But we got to the same place we thought we might.

In a series of Biggest Moments for various players, this would be the biggest start of young Mat Latos' career. Bigger than the previous Biggest Appearance that came just a few days a go.

Go Reds! They're my favorite team. As you know.

When I said I liked thrilling conclusions, I didn't mean it.

The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game

Sam LeCure. Le Man continues to be nails. After a Sept/Oct where he allowed a .063/.167/.094 (!!!) line to opposing batters, he's now entered in two very messy situations during this series and cleaned things up. Leake was inexplicably allowed to go three batters into the fifth inning - the first two of which clubbed doubles - before being lifted. LeCure got the next two outs, returning in the sixth to strike out the side after a Hunter Pence single.

Key Plays

The writing was on the wall early for Leake, though he was able to limit damage to one run in the first after a lead-off away-run by Angel "Contradictory Name" Pagan and a double by Posey.

Zito looked every bit Leake's equal in the home half. The Reds evened things up with an bases-loaded RBI walk by ROY, but settled for one. That would be the game in miniature.

A bunch of unmentionable things happened after that, mixed in with a Ludwick solo shot and a Brandon Phillips sac fly. In case it would influence your "Reds to be pissed at" list for tonight, Drew Stubbs doubled before that sac fly.

For a reasons I'm sure won't make sense in the morning, Jose Arredondo was brought into pitch in the 7th inning of a 5-3 playoff game. Although he could've given up -1 runs and it wouldn't have mattered.

Reds lose 8-3. They'll play the Big Game tomorrow.

Other Notes!

I still haven't shaved my playoff beard. I can't remember what the right thing to do is in this situation.

Joey Votto has been on base at pretty much the exact same rate he has been all season (.470), so any wining about him being part of the problem doesn't wash. But would you move him up to 1st or 2nd in the order? Why am I torturing myself?

No NL team has ever failed to advance after going up 2-0 in the NLDS - and only four teams total in 42 series since the beginning of 3-division play.

No Reds team has even not advanced to the NLCS after having won two NLDS games.

It wasn't supposed to be this way. After dominating the Giants in their home park, winning - and scoring runs - in Cincinnati almost seemed like an afterthought. There wasn't supposed to be a Game 4, let alone a Mike Leake start (no offense).

We got a little punch-drunk.

The hand has been dealt. And it's still a very good hand. The Reds were forced to call Mike Leake out of semi-vacation (he's been throwing bullpens) to start, with Cueto down and Latos suffering some kind of bug. The bad news is that Leake has pitched considerably worse at GABP than he has on the road this season. The good news is that the the Reds are pretty well backstopped in the bullpen thanks to strong starts in Game 2 and 3. They also have Mat Latos - and Bronson - in wait for tomorrow or, possibly, an emergency today.

Just as good is the news that almost the whole lineup against Zito has been good-to-great. Joey Votto is really the only one that's struggled. And Zito has been terrible at GABP. Of course, the Giants have hit Leake too. But remember what I said about the bullpen?

Losing Cueto for this series and next sucks. So here's a little bit more good news: Mike Leake went 8-29 with a HR against lefty starters this season.

No official word yet from the Reds, but the internet is atwitter with confirmation that Leake is the man today. [UPDATE] The word is official now. It's Leake.

The news on Twitter right now is that the Reds will activate Mike Leake to make the start in Game 4 today of the NLDS. The Fay says no decision has been made yet, and he's going to talk to Dusty here directly. But I doubt the internet would be wrong about this. This likely means that Johnny Cueto will be disabled to make room on the roster, which means he will not be available for the remainder of the NLDS and also for the entire NLCS (if it comes to that).

I'm not sure how to feel about this, honestly. The Reds had a few options here, and I guess we just have to trust that they made the right decision given the information available to them. Mat Latos threw 75 pitches on Saturday, so one could reasonably assume he would be available today to throw on three day's rest. He's never made a start on three day's rest before, but he did pitch Saturday in relief on just three day's rest. So take that for what it's worth. One has to think the Reds just aren't comfortable with the idea of running him out there again. Which may or may not be okay.

The big take away here is that Johnny Cueto is more hurt than we had hoped. The news has been encouraging up to this point, with Cueto saying he felt better and the Reds contemplating this long about whether or not he could pitch today. But this means he's hurt enough to need a solid week or two of rest, which totally sucks big fat honky apples.

Good for Mike Leake though, right? He gets a chance to make a post-season start and hopefully make up for his lackluster performance over the final month of the season. Hopefully we get "Mike Leake!" and not "Mike Leake?".

Despite Homer Bailey following up his No-Hitter with a No-Hit-Bid, the Reds' bats went silent in the potential clinch game...and their gloves failed them late.

The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game

Homer Bailey took a no-hitter into the 6th, continuing the dominance he displayed in his no-hitter in his last outing vs. the Pirates in the Regular Season. Bailey finished with a 1 hitter in his 7 IP, the second consecutive Reds starter to toss 7 innings of 1 hit baseball this postseason. Considering Cueto's unfortunate mystery oblique/back issue, it's rather awesome to see Arroyo recapture his past stuff, Bailey reach the lofty potential he always had, and Latos show that he's capable of surprise spontaneous spot-starts. Though the rotation, the most consistent and accountable part of the Reds season, has been thrust into a bit of flux, it's nice to know that there are some gamers capable of elevating their performance. I expect to see Mat Latos called upon to do just that in Game 4.

Key Plays

The Reds got off to a quick start in this one, as Brandon Phillips led off with a high-hopping grounder up the middle for a single. With Zack Cozart at the plate, Phillips took second on a wild pitch, and attempted to take third, only to be gunned out. Certain RR's will tell you this is the reason the Reds lost the game, lost the series, got Dusty Baker and Brook Jacoby fired, and caused Michael Bourn to choose the Nationals over the Reds this offseason. Anyhoo, Cozart walked, Ludwick singled, and Jay Bruce singled, scoring Cozart. Despite the rash of postgame reactions, this fact remains: The Reds left the first inning with a 1-0 lead, and their starting pitcher took a no-hitter into the 6th. Not all butterflies cause hurricanes in the Gulf when they flap their wings in Africa.

The Giants small-balled their way to the equalizer in the third. Homer hit Gregor Blanco to start the inning and followed with a walk of Brandon Crawford. Ryan Vogelsong sac-bunted the runners over, and Dan Brown favorite Angel Pagan hit a sac fly that scored Blanco. Game tied, 1-1.

Sean Marshall and Aroldis Chapman continued the pitching dominance through the 8th and 9th, and Jonathan Broxton was brought on in the 10th...and that went awry. Broxtapotamus allowed a leadoff single to Buster Posey, a follow-up single to Hunter Pence (despite his cramping calf limiting him to a trot). Broxy got the next two batters via strikeout, which was awesome, but a passed ball by Ryan Haingan (on what looked like a missed signal/call) allowed the runners to advance, and Posey scored when Joaquin Arias' grounder was error-like bumbled by Scott Rolen. Dang. Giants led, 2-1, and the Reds couldn't rally in the bottom of the 10th. Reds lose, 2-1.

Other Notes!

Who shaved their playoff beard? I know one of you did, and it's your fault the Reds lost tonight.

The Giants have only mustered 13 hits and 3 runs through the first 3 games of this NLDS, but have a win to show for it. The Reds have 26 hits and 16 runs in that time.

Don't let the Reds lack of a win fool you tonight, folks. It was merely deception, as they attempt to provide more home games for you locals to attend. Somebody's gotta pay for Votto's knee surgeries and walks.

Allsa y'alls keep preaching your love for the funk. I love it. I love being funkdafied.

New Threads!

Hey! We're almost up to 1700 comments, and Broxtapotamus can't get an out. Seems like karma needs a new dogma, no?

And it's also an oblique oblique strain.

What was once back spasms is now something closer to what it looked like on Saturday night: a strain to this muscle on Cueto's right (pitching) side. We'll assume it's the external oblique anyway, they didn't specify.

Everyone's physiology is different, but we've been here before. Stubbs strained an oblique and missed 19 days in June. Cozart missed 18 days in September.

Cueto's twisty wind-up could make his injury more acute - and harder to play through. But Dusty reminds us that we just don't know:

You've seen the obliques: Sometimes they hang around for a while, and sometimes they don't hang around for a while. We don't know the severity of it. He came in yesterday and got treatment all day long, so right now I would just be guessing to let you know how he is exactly right now. In a nutshell, we don't know."

If Cueto is deactivated and replaced, he'll miss the NLCS too. I like -ManBearPig's idea that, if the Reds win tonight, they replace Cairo with Leake. That way, Cueto could still be an option for the NLCS.

If there is a Game 4, the Reds will probably have to remove Cueto, since you can only sub in like players (pitcher for pitcher). Unless:

They decide to start someone already on the roster (Latos, LeCure, bullpen game) rather than Leake

They bring in Leake and replace someone other than Cueto (under a possibly false pretext)

They convince the league office that Leake is a hitter by trade
