Silent offense sends Cincinnati Reds to 6th straight loss

They now find themselves two games under .500.

New York Mets v Cincinnati Reds

The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game

Wade Miley returned to his rock-solid ways on Saturday, keeping the Cincinnati Reds in their game against the St. Louis Cardinals while we all hoped the offense and bullpen would match him with their efforts.

The bullpen was solid. The offense...not so much.

Miley scattered 5 hits and a pair of runs in his 6.0 IP, while Sal Romano and Heath Hembree chipped in with zeroes of their own in relief. For that, they deserve their dap.

Key Plays

  • Miley’s day didn’t get off to a flying start, however. A trio of early singles in the Bottom of the 1st concluded with Nolan Arenado driving in Tommy Edman, and the Reds were behind from the start of this one.
  • Andrew Knizner’s double in the Bottom of the 6th scored Tyler O’Neill for an insurance run, and that was all the offense the Cardinals would need on the day. Reds lost, 2-0.

Other Notes

  • For whatever reason, this all has the feel of a series where the Reds will come out and win 8-1 or something tomorrow to walk away feeling ‘good’ about the series despite also walking away having lost 2 of 3. I don’t know what that feeling is permeating my baseball brain at the moment, but after the last week of baseball, it sure as hell does.
  • For whatever reason, this all has the feel of a series where the Reds will come out and lose 6-0 again tomorrow, too. Baseball, man.
  • Why are both of those feelings bouncing around my brain? Probably because it’s Luis Castillo’s turn in the rotation on Sunday in the series finale, and I’ve got absolutely zero feel for what he’ll bring to the table. The talent there is undeniable, obviously, but he’s not really looked right at all this year. First pitch is set for 2:15 PM ET, when we’ll find out if it’ll be another week before he begins to help carry this team the way we hoped.
