Well, that sucked.
The Reds find themselves coming into a beautiful Sunday trying not to get swept by losing 4 games in 2 days. Thankfully, they have reinforcements coming in for this one. Sal Romano was brought in as the 26th man for the doubleheader, and the Reds made their first round of September call-ups. They’re expected to bring up Wandy Peralta and Matt Bowman to shore up the bullpen, along with today’s starter Tyler Mahle.
Mahle hasn’t made a big league start since July 19th, which was against these very same Cardinals. He’s been rehabbing his injury in Louisville, and went 5 shutout innings in his last start on the 26th of August. He’ll face Miles Mikolas for the Cards, who has been rock solid so far this year. The Reds have been his Achilles heel, though, as he owns a 0-3 record against them this season in 4 starts.
The second game will feature Reds ace Luis Castillo taking on Daniel Ponce de Leon for St. Louis. Castillo struck out 11 in his last outing, and looks to have bounced back from his recent struggles. Ponce de Leon has spent most of the season at AAA, and also hasn’t started at the big league level since July, like Mahle. You may remember him from his big league debut last season, where he threw 7 no-hit innings before getting pulled for his pitch count.
Nasty Nick is back in the lineup for this one.
Just like yesterday, first pitch at 1:15 for Game 1, and 7:15 for Game 2. Go Reds.
