Losing 4 games in a row is a dent in the momentum of any team trying to compete in the month of August. For a Cincinnati Reds club that was already on the fringe of competing, that’s pretty well the death knell.
Not only was it a 4th straight loss yesterday, it was a sweep at the hands of the Washington Nationals and a 17-7 beatdown that felt like the last of the air being let out of the 2019 balloon. Still, there are some 50+ games left to be played this season, and miracles don’t begin from points of advantage...
In town for the next 4 days are the St. Louis Cardinals, riding a 5 game win streak and currently sitting atop the once-crowded NL Central standings. On the mound for them tonight will be the struggling Michael Wacha, though it’s worth noting he’s 12-1 with a 2.79 ERA in his career against the Reds, so who the hell knows what will happen.
Meanwhile, the Reds will turn to Sonny Gray to help turn their tides, and he might be the single best suited Cincinnati hurler to do just that. The righty has pitched to a stellar 1.74 ERA over his last 8 starts (51.2 IP), and has allowed just a .542 OPS in that span. Hopefully, that kind of dominance paired with a dinger or 6 from Aristides Aquino will help propel the Reds to some kind of miracle run. Hopefully...
First pitch is set for 7:10 PM ET.
Go Reds. Go.
