The Reds have a chance to complete a 2-game sweep today, as they lock in with the Brewers for an early one today.
Pitching fans will be tuning in to this one to see a matchup of 2 of the top pitchers in the NL so far, in Luis Castillo and Zach Davies. Castillo comes in after a shakier than usual performance against the Cubs on Thursday, where he threw 5 1⁄3 innings and gave up two runs, but was able to keep himself in line for the win. That was his shortest outing of the season.
Castillo has only made one other start at Miller Park, a 10-4 win last April.
Reds fans know Zach Davies well, but may not be aware that he’s 5-0 with a 1.54 ERA so far this year. He’s only one of two pitchers with a better ERA than Castillo so far, and the Reds already faced the other one on Sunday. Davies has put up 3 quality starts in a row in May, so the Reds will look to make him labor with hopes of getting to the bullpen.
If you think as a Reds fan you’ve seen Davies a lot, it’s because you have. He’s faced the Reds 11 times in his career, second only to the Cubs in that regard. Joey Votto leads the way against him with a 1.003 OPS in 29 career, ABs, but look out for Yasiel Puig in this one, who’s 3-for-10 lifetime against Davies with two doubles and a triple. Louisville’s Scott Schebler is the only current Red with more than one dinger against Davies in his career.
With another off day tomorrow, it’s crucial that the Reds go into this one in better shape than they did the last one.
Go Reds!
