Once upon a time, Cincinnati Reds starter Luis Castillo was a member of the San Diego Padres. That lasted for roughly two days at the 2016 MLB non-waiver trade deadline, as he was part of the package sent by the Miami Marlins to the Friars in the deal headlined by Andrew Cashner. Of course, one faulty Colin Rea elbow discovery later, the deal hit the skids, with Castillo being returned to Miami.
Some four and a half months after that, the Reds landed him in exchange for Dan Straily, and the rest, so they say, is history.
Castillo will face those Padres tonight in Cactus League play, as the Reds host the Padres in some under-the-lights action in Goodyear. He’ll be fronting a split-squad, though, as the other half of the Reds will be travelling up to Mesa to face the Chicago Cubs - Tyler Mahle will be on the mound for that subsect of Redleg.
Reds/Padres will begin promptly at 9:05 PM ET, while Reds/Cubs first pitch is set for 10:05 PM ET. Unfortunately, neither game will be televised, so you’ll have to fall asleep slowly to the dulcet tones of the Reds Radio Network broadcast. That said, Nick Senzel will be facing the Cubs while Joey Votto takes on the Padres, so you’re going to need two feeds to catch up with both of them.
Per usual, thanks to The Athletic’s C. Trent Rosecrans for handily-dandily tweeting out the lineups for today’s game(s).
