Arizona Fall League update: Tyler Stephenson is a Fall Star

A look at the Reds youngsters at around the halfway(ish) point.

The Arizona Fall League has been in swing since late September and several Reds farm hands are taking part in the festivities as members of the Glendale Desert Dogs. It... hasn’t gone well for the team and many of the Reds players.

We’ll start with the good: Tyler Stephenson hasn’t had any troubles. He’s mashing right now and, for his efforts, he’s been named to the Fall Star roster. He’s the only Red to make the team.

The Desert Dogs have struggled altogether, but it is not because of Tyler Stephenson. He’s been the team’s best batter, slashing .414/.485/.621 with six doubles and three RBIs. He’s only struck out three times in 29 AB.

Still, the team is in last place with a record of 5-12. Including Stephenson, the Desert Dogs only have three players batting with an OPS over .800 (Justin Yurchak 1.069, Ivan Herrera .817). The Reds, as a whole collective, aren’t helping, but it’s not like the team is mashing in general.

Here’s the Reds batting lines:

Reds Fall League Hitters

PLAYER AVG OBP SLG 2B HR RBI K BB
PLAYER AVG OBP SLG 2B HR RBI K BB
Tyler Stephenson 0.414 0.485 0.621 3 0 3 3 3
Jonathan India 0.119 0.255 0.214 1 1 6 15 7
Jose Garcia 0.222 0.282 0.333 1 1 6 9 2
Stuart Fairchild 0.267 0.267 0.333 1 0 0 3 0

As you can see, the non-Tyler Stephenson bunch of Reds hitters are not faring so well, led by (?) Jonathan India. India is the top rated prospect partaking in the Arizona games, and he’s continued his 2019 struggles in a big way, He’s managed a home run, but has struck out 15 times in 42 AB. The seven walks bumps the OBP into something resembling not-horrible territory, but it’s been somewhat of a month to forget for the former first round pick.

Stu Fairchild’s working with the smallest of small samples here, as he’s only played in four games so far, which could explain why his stat line is mostly empty, while Jose Garcia is having about the time you’d expect to have Jose Garcia to have in this league at this point, I think.

Reds Fall League Pitchers

PLAYER IP ERA WHIP ER K BB HR
PLAYER IP ERA WHIP ER K BB HR
Jordan Johnson 10 4.50 1.70 5 12 7 1
Diomar Lopez 8 4.50 1.13 4 7 1 1
Dauri Moreta 7 1.29 0.86 1 8 2 0
Cory Thompson 5.2 7.94 2.29 5 4 3 0

We’ll dealing with infinitely small sample sizes here, especially with pitchers, but the standout here so far is Dauri Moreta. He’s given up only a single run in seven innings (six appearances) striking out eight against only two walks. He’s surrendered four hits.

Cory Thompson has seen better days, allowing 10 hits in five appearances.

The Fall Stars Game will be played this Saturday night at 8 PM and can be streamed at MLB.com. The full roster can be found here.
