The first game of this particular series between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs was pretty danged awesome right up until the point where it stunk, which is just how things have largely gone between these two for some time now.
Ian Happ’s 7th inning dinger turned the tides, shelving what little good feeling the Reds might have otherwise taken from a game where they finally hit Cole Hamels - a bit - and got a solid start from Matt Harvey. Instead, it was yet another loss, yet another chance for some 37,000 raving Wrigley fans to go nuts and sing their damn song. Blergh.
On Saturday, the Reds will look to stem Chicago’s postseason optimism with Cody Reed on the mound, which sounds daunting. The Cubs, meanwhile, will send ace Jon Lester to the bump, which sounds daunty-daunting.
First pitch is set for 4:05 PM ET, and is the MLB.tv free game of the day, for those parties that are interested.
Go Reds.
Go.
