Exactly one year ago today, the Cincinnati Reds waxed the San Diego Padres 11-3. Joey Votto hit his 30th dinger of the 2017 season, Zack Cozart was hitting .318/.404/.573, and each of Jesse Winker, Adam Duvall, Arismendy Alcantara, Blake Wood, Tim Adleman, and Patrick Kivlehan appeared in the game.
Well, tonight not a single one of those folks will play for the Reds, as all but Votto are either off the roster altogether or out for the year - and Votto won’t play due to the lingering soreness in his knee after taking a 96 mph Ryan Madson heater off it over the weekend. Man, how much a year can change things.
Sal Romano, though, will get the start for Cincinnati as they take on the New York Mets, with hopes that they can boot the 6-4 loss from last night out of their memory and pick up a win in the second game of the series. Lefty Jason Vargas is on the mound, but never fear - Dilson Herrera isn’t playing. Why would he ever play, much less against a lefty?
Sigh.
First pitch is set for 7:10 PM ET.
