Here we are to kick off the 2018 minor league baseball season. We didn’t get all the games, and we didn’t get to see all our favorite prospects. But, it’s still fun and we got some nicknames and dumb things to look at during our morning coffee. Enjoy... or don’t. We won’t care much either way. Suckers.
Brandon Larson Honorary Star Of The Night
This is something I just decided to start doing. It’s a fun little thing where we get a little MVP talk from the previous night of underling baseball. We’ll try it out and see what you think.
Stuart Fairchild, OF - 2 for 4, double, 2 RBI, BB, and a run scored.
The third guy the Reds took in the 2017 draft sure did acclimate himself well in his debut to the Dayton faithful. There’s a lot to be excited about with this young man, and if he can stick in center field that would be just awesome.
Louisville will play their season opener tonight at 7:00 PM ET at Louisville Slugger Field. They don’t have a pitcher listed, but I’d assume it will be Robert Stephenson.
Pensacola Blue Wahoos 4, Mobile BayBears 9
Daniel “Can’t Do” Wright took the start and got absolutely crushed. He allowed 7 earned runs over 2 innings on 8 hits and 2 dingers, but he did strikeout 3. The back half of the bullpen did show up though. Brennan “San” Bernardino struck out 1 over 2 scoreless, and Jose Rafael “Falafel” De Paula “Deen” struck out 2 over 2 scoreless. Nick “Bong Rip” Longhi went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored from the lead off spot, and Gavin “Deep In” LaValley went 1 for 3 with 2 RBI, and a walk.
The Wahoos play tonight with ToBeDetermined on the mound at 7:05 PM CT.
Daytona Tortugas 2, Florida Fire Frogs 3
Tony “Hot Fire” Santillan must have been on a bit of a pitch count. He threw 78 pitches in 4 innings while giving up only an earned run. He allowed 4 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 5. That’s not too bad. Kevin “Load The” Canelon struck out 3 over 2 scoreless with a clean line. Bruce “Bigelow” Yari walked thrice (3), and so did TJ “Of The Hill” Friedl who also had RBI. Luis “MVP” Gonzalez went 2 for 5 with a double and a run scored.
The Tortugas play tonight with TheBoobyDoctor on the mound at 7:05 PM ET.
Dayton Dragons 4, Bowling Green Massacres 5
Packy “Naughty” Naughton unfurled his wackiest of stuff. He gave up 2 earned runs over 5 innings on 6 hits, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts. The bullpen was pretty decent even though their defense let them down. Tyler “All You Can Eat” Buffett struck out 4 over 2.2 innings and Austin “1984” Orewiler struck out 1 over an inning. Neither gave up earned runs. Andy “Slug Lord” Sugilio went 3 for 5 with a double and a run scored, Stu “Balls” Fairchild went 2 for 4 with a double, 2 RBI, a walk, and a run scored, and Leandro “Carlos” Santana went 2 for 3 with a walk. I’d like to point out that Jeter “Re2pect” Downs singled and walked.
Dayton will play tonight at 7:35 PM ET with Mac Sceroler on the mound.
