Cactus League Game 9: Reds at Cubs

Luis Castillo is back on the bump.

MLB: Cincinnati Reds-Workouts Kareem Elgazzar-USA TODAY Sports

Luis Castillo returns to the mound today in Mesa as the Cincinnati Reds travel to take on the Chicago Cubs. And, as you’ll see below, this is no “San Francisco Giants on Friday” lineup that Chicago is rolling out, as the top of their order features nothing but everyday players - some of whom are downright superstars.

Castillo, though, has the kind of stuff that’s good enough to get out anyone on the planet when he’s on, as he was in last week’s outing. Hopefully the talented fireballer can replicate that performance again today.

Robert Stephenson is among the pitchers travelling with the club today, and it’s expected that he’ll get multiple innings in relief after previously getting work as a starter. I wouldn’t read too much into that yet, though, since other 5th starter candidates have been getting their work in in relief, too. Jackson Stephens, Keury Mella, Kyle Crockett, Oliver Perez, and Ariel Hernandez are among the other pitchers available today.

First pitch is set for 3:05 PM EST, but you won’t be able to watch it unless you’re in the stadium. There’ll be radio, though, per usual.

Other Notes

  • Batting Billy Hamilton and Ben Revere 1-2 is...hooo buddy, it sure is something.
  • Dilson Herrera’s shoulder may be barking again, but it is the guy’s birthday. Happy Birthday, Pickle!
  • He probably won’t see any action, but talented young Canadian OF Miles Gordon is traveling with the club today.
  • Through 8 games, the Reds have a combined .293 team OBP. If this stat is disturbing to you, turn back to Other Note number 1.
