Cactus League Game 8: Reds at Giants

Homer Bailey gets his second start of the spring.

MLB: Spring Training-Cleveland Indians at Cincinnati Reds Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

Homer Bailey fired a pair of scoreless innings in his Cactus League debut last weekend, fanning 3, walking none, and allowing just a pair of hits in the tie against Cleveland. He’ll look to replicate that performance on Friday against the San Francisco Giants, and he’ll do so while sharing the mound with ace Madison Bumgarner.

Raisel Iglesias, Amir Garrett, Zack Weiss, and Jimmy Herget are among the relievers who’ll be traveling to Scottsdale and will be available to back Bailey in this one. Nick Senzel will also travel with the team, and I’d wager you’ll see him at shortstop at some point around the 6th inning.

First pitch is set for 3:05 PM ET. Once again, there’s no TV feed, so you’ll have to get your fix on the radio.

Other Notes

  • Better Off Red’s Jamie Ramsey was in attendance for yesterday’s intersquad game - the one where Brandon Finnegan finally took the mound for the first time this spring. He’s got notes on the pitching performances and some pictures, as well as proof that 19 year old international signee Jose Israel Garcia participated in the game. He’s ranked as the 11th best prospect in the Cincinnati system by MLB Pipeline after signing for more than $5 million (plus overage penalties) last summer, though we’ve barely seen anything about him other than his scouting report.
  • It would certainly appear that the Reds are facing the C,D, or even E lineup from San Francisco today, what with Brandon Crawford the only real regular in the lineup to start - and even he’s been battling a jammed finger. No Buster Posey, Brandon Belt, Joe Panik, Andrew McCutchen, Evan Longoria, Hunter Pence, or Austin Jackson today, which at least makes having no TV feed a bit more palatable. Still, that’s somewhat BS.
  • The Reds made their first real roster moves of camp this morning, reassigning Barrett Astin, Domingo Tapia, and Ben Rowen to minor league camp, as the team announced.
