Cactus League Game 19: Reds at Diamondbacks

Bob Steve set to throw rocks.

After the cavalcade of unfortunate pitching news the Cincinnati Reds dealt with on Sunday, an off-day seemed greatly needed for us all. The Reds return to action on Wednesday in Scottsdale, as they’re set to take on the Arizona Diamondbacks and former Cy Young winner Zack Greinke.

Robert Stephenson will start for Cincinnati with hopes that he can build on his 3 solid innings from his previous outing. Obviously, with the oblique injury to Anthony DeSclafani and but bump-in-the-road/arm Brandon Finnegan is dealing with, this is quite the spotlight opportunity for Bob Steve to firmly state his case to be in the team’s Opening Day rotation. Zack Weiss, Tanner Rainey, and Kevins Quackenbush and Shackelford are listed as some of the options to back Stephenson on the mound today.

First pitch is set for 4 PM ET, and the game will be televised on both FS-Ohio and MLB Network.

Other Notes

  • Raisel Iglesias and David Hernandez are both scheduled to throw in minor league games today. Speaking of which, as minor league camp ramps up, we’ll be seeing both an increase in cuts from camp and pitchers getting work in on both levels more frequently, especially given the competition for rotation spots. The Athletic’s C. Trent Rosecrans has more details on the upcoming pitching schedule.
  • If you clicked on that link, you’re probably wondering where Luis Castillo and Amir Garrett stand in all of this. Well, turns out Castillo’s back east with his wife at the moment as they’re expecting their first child any minute. As for Garrett, it looks as if Sunday will be his day.
  • Also not listed anywhere in that group: Brandon Finnegan. I’ve got no clue yet when he’ll next get a start, but considering how late his spring began and how little time is left before Opening Day, it’s looking less and less likely he’ll be ready to go from day one.
