Cactus League Game 2: Rockies at Reds

The undefeated Reds tangle with Colorado.

MLB: Cincinnati Reds-Workouts Kareem Elgazzar-USA TODAY Sports

Fresh off a victory in Friday’s Cactus League opener, the undefeated Cincinnati Reds return to the grind today by hosting the Colorado Rockies in Goodyear at 3:05 PM ET. Michael Lorenzen will get the start in his quest to return to action as a starting pitcher, while the likes of Cody Reed, Ariel Hernandez, Zack Weiss, and Kyle Crockett - among others - will be in the bullpen to back him.

Yency Almonte will start for Colorado, who fell to Arizona 7-6 in their Cactus League opener yesterday. Unfortunately, there’s no TV coverage for today’s game, so 700 WLW will be your go-to source for the action.

Other Notes

  • Prior to this one, the Reds signed veteran LHP Oliver Perez to a minor league deal with an invite to camp, and MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon reports he’ll earn $1.25 million should he make the club. Most recently with the Washington Nationals, Perez has morphed from a starter to reliever to LOOGY through his career, and will presumably battle Reed and Crockett for a lefty spot in the bullpen behind Wandy Peralta.
  • Jose Siri’s crash into the CF wall yesterday will cost him a few weeks on the sidelines, as he’s got ligament issues in his left thumb after it bent awkwardly. Dang. The Athletic’s C. Trent Rosecrans reports he’ll be sidelined “a few weeks.”
  • Billy Hamilton’s leading off again. 79 MLB players have had at least 1260 PA at leadoff since the start of the 2000 season. Take a guess on which player has the worst OBP of that group in that time. (It’s still just spring. It’s still just spring. It’s still just spring. It’s still just the fifth year in a row we’ve said ‘it’s still just spring.’ It’s still just spring...)
  • Go Reds! They’re my favorite team!
