Roster moves: Reds claim Buchanan from Cubs, Garrett to DL, DFA O’Brien

Garrett is shelved with hip inflammation, which hopefully isn’t bad

The Reds made a few roster moves today. They placed Amir Garrett on the DL with hip inflammation, claimed righty Jake Buchanan from the Cubs, and DFA’d Peter O’Brien.

Garrett is the 58th Reds starting pitcher to land on the DL so far this season. “Right hip inflammation” doesn’t sound all that fun, either. Red Reporter’s head trainer and physical therapist, arf-diggity, says inflammation in the hip flexor is preferable to inflammation in the hip labrum, so hopefully it is the former. The Reds haven’t clarified.

Buchanan is 27 and has pitched 15 innings between the Astros and Cubs over the last two seasons. He throws a high-80s fastball and limits both walks and strikeouts. Hopefully he can throw a few cromulent innings for this pitching staff, especially since Garrett is now out for a bit.

Peter O’Brien, we hardly knew ye, boy-o. He was claimed off waivers just a bit ago. He got 24 PAs with the Bats and will now probably get picked up by some other team.

Clearly, the Garrett news is the sucks part. It’s not like he has thrown particularly well so far this year, but we shouldn’t overlook the fact that he has thrown at all so far this year. As Wick said earlier today, the lineup is doing more than its fair share. Just a little bit of healthy effective pitching could do wonders for this team.
