Dick Williams Promoted to Reds GM, Jocketty to Stay on as President of Baseball Ops

The times they are a-changin'

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Cincinnati Reds have announced that Dick Williams, 44, who was presumed by some to be the GM of the future, is now the GM of the present.  Walt Jocketty has a new title as President of Baseball Operations, which certainly sounds very important.

Williams has been with the organization for the past 10 years, serving as Director of Baseball Business Operations, Vice President of Baseball Operations, and Assistant General Manager during his time with the Reds.  According to the team's press release, Williams will immediately assume some of the day to day duties of the job, while Walt will continue to oversee the organization.

Whether or not this move will see large scale philosophical changes in the way the Reds do business remains to be seen, but Williams does have the reputation of being more analytics friendly than Jocketty.  At the very least this keeps the keys to the Reds out of Kevin Towers' hands, and for that we can be thankful.
