On this day in 1858, former Red Bill "Gene" Tierney was born in Boston.
On this day in 1903, Cincinnati signed leftfielder "Peekskill Pete" Cregan. According to Wikipedia, Peekskill is a small town in New York, and Cregan was from nearby Kingston, NY. I suspect that Cregan spent some amount of time in Peekskill, but I can't confirm this hypothesis. Cregan did play for both Kingston and Schenectady in the New York State League.
On this day in 1917, former Red Bob Thurman was born in Kellyville, OK.
On this day in 1922, former Red James Edwards made his big league debut with the Cleveland Indians.
On this day in 1942, Hall of Famer Tony Perez was born in Camaguey, Cuba.
On this day in 1949, former Red Mike Kahoe died in Akron, OH at the age of 75.
On this day in 1952, former Red Red Dooin died in Rochester, NY at the age of 72.
On this day in 1958, former Red and Kelly's Killer Billy Clingman died in Cincinnati at the age of 88.
On this day in 1984, former Red Elmer Riddle died in Columbus, GA at the age of 69. He had a few good seasons with the Reds during the early 1940s. Riddle led the league in ERA (2.24), ERA+ (161), and won-lost percentage (.826) in 1941 and wins (21) in 1943.
On this day in 1988, Cincinnati signed utility player Skeeter Barnes.
On this day in 2008, former Red Jose Arredondo made his major league debut with the Angels. As of now, he's a free agent, and while I know that Arredondo struggled at AAA last season, I am surprised that another team hasn't kicked the tires on him.
Also on this day in 2008, Paul Janish made his big league debut with the Reds.
On this day in 2013, Cincinnati signed centerfielder Luis Durango.
