This Day in Reds History: Lutz debuts

Jeff Curry

On this day in 1877, the Reds temporarily acquired outfielder and pitcher Jack Manning from the Boston Red Stockings (Braves) on a loan. Cincinnati sent him back to Boston before the 1878 season. I'm not sure when the practice of loaning players died out in baseball. Does anyone know? I'm fairly certain that teams still loaned players out as late as the early 1900s.

On this day in 1934, former Red Augie Galan made his major league debut with the Chicago Cubs. Galan was a productive batter who hit for average and could take a walk. In three different seasons, he drew more than 100 walks and twice led the league in the category. Galan had a very good season with Cincinnati in 1947. He hit .314/.449/.416 (138 wRC+) and walked 94 times while striking out just 19, which is a ratio of nearly 5:1. Galan was even more potent at the plate in 1948 with the Reds, but made just 107 plate appearances that season. He played in just 34 games in 1949 before retiring to the Pacific Coast League (he was originally from Berkeley).
