Last week I wrote about Devin Mesoraco's otherworldly hitting since returning from the DL, but unfortunately he went right back on it after injuring himself April 25, merely two weeks after returning. This time, he suffered a strained hamstring while running the bases, and depending on the severity of the strain may miss much more than the minimum 15 days. Todd Frazier was also removed from the game with groin tightness, though he only missed the following game before returning to action.
Aroldis Chapman is slated to throw batting practice today, and if there are no issues he will be ready to begin his rehab assignment in the minor leagues. This puts him right in line for a return in the team's stated timetable of 6-8 weeks. Mat Latos has thrown multiple times from flat ground, and may be ready to begin rehab soon as well, as long as there are no setbacks with bullpen sessions or live batting practice, which will be the next step.
In the minor leagues, at AAA Louisville, OF Thomas Neal returned from the 7-day DL on April 22 after missing 8 days. David Holmberg was placed on the 7-day DL retroactive to April 19. Perhaps his injury is partly to blame for his very disappointing results in the early going.
At AA Pensacola, OF prospect Yorman Rodriguez was placed on the 7-day DL on April 26 with a strained oblique. A+ OF prospect Jesse Winker was also placed on the DL on April 24 after running into the wall and suffering a concussion. Rodriguez and Winker are two of the consensus top-3 OF prospects in the organization, and certainly top-10 overall prospects as well.
At A- Dayton, SS Humberto Valor returned to the active roster on April 26 from an injury sustained before the start of the season. Check the Reds injury situation at a glance any time via the link.
