On this day in 1910, Art Phelan made his major league debut with the Reds. Phelan played second and third base for Cincinnati in 1910 and 1912.
On this day in 1918, Hall of Famer Jake Beckley died in Kansas City at the age of 50. "Eagle Eye" played first base for Cincinnati from 1897 to 1903. Beckley hit .325/.375/.443 (129 OPS+) with 592 runs, 570 RBI, and 114 stolen bases while wearing the wishbone C. Surprisingly, Beckley is not in the Reds Hall of Fame, which is surely one of the institution's more egregious oversights. Beckley has a plaque in Cooperstown, and his traditional and advanced stats are good enough for enshrinement in the Queen City.
On this day in 1934, the Reds waived Hall of Fame pitcher Dazzy Vance. The seven-time strikeout champ tossed only 18 innings for Cincinnati. Vance finished the season with the Cardinals.
On this day in 1960, former Red Tommy Corcoran died in Plainfield, CT at the age of 91. Corcoran played shortstop for the Reds from 1897 to 1906. In that time, he hit .249/.278/.323 (70 OPS+).
On this day in 1971, former Red Michael Tucker was born in South Boston, VA.
On this day in 1972, third baseman Denis Menke doubled in Tony Perez in the bottom of the 10th to give the Reds a 5-4 win over the Astros. Menke and Joe Morgan both homered as well. The victory catapulted the Reds into first place in the NL West. Cincinnati would not trail again and won the division by 10.5 games over Los Angeles.
On this day in 1995, former Red David Weathers pitched five no-hit innings for the Marlins before leaving the game with an injury. Coincidentally, the Marlins were playing the Reds, and Weathers' start paved the way for a Florida win, 5-1.
On this day in 1996, former Red Tim Belk made his major league debut with Cincinnati. In the first game of a doubleheader against the Phillies at Cinergy Field Riverfront Stadium, Belk started at first base and went one for three with a run and a walk. He also started the nightcap at first base, going one for two with another run before manager Ray Knight lifted him for a pinch-runner. Despite a productive day, Belk appeared in only five more major league games and collected one other hit.
Also on this day in 1996, former Red and drummer Danny Seraphine Dan Serafini made his major league debut with the Twins. Serafini started the second game of a doubleheader against the Yankees. He picked up the loss as he gave up five runs in four and a third innings.
