Well then. This just in from the Reds:
Reds disable RHP Jonathan Broxton (right elbow), recall from Louisville RHP Pedro Villarreal.
— Reds (@Reds) June 15, 2013
Sucks, but not entirely unexpected. Broxton has been pitching terribly for about a week now.
Another thing this tells us is that there might need to be some tough decisions made with this bullpen. The injury bug has decimated what was once a strength on this team, and now the cupboard is so bare that we're subjected to the bottom of the barrel. Eventually, the Reds may have to start giving veteran guys like Jose Arredondo and Zach Duke a shot at sticking here, but to do that, they'll need to open up 40-man spots. Is Pedro Villarreal that valuable? I guess we'll find out soon enough, won't we? At any rate, any time Alfredo Simon becomes one of your higher-leverage guys, you're in trouble.
We need answers, Walt. Not Pedro Villarreal. But good luck to the kid anyway.
