Organizational Injury Report - 6/10 A Lot of Uncertainty

Cueto re-injured himself, Marshall and Heisey still without timetables, Ludwick still a long way off, but BP is back to game action.

USA TODAY Sports

The big news since the last injury update is that Johnny Cueto made one start after coming off the DL only to go right back on it again with the lat injury that put him there the first time. This isn't the first time the Reds may have brought a player back before he was fully ready and had it cost them. The word is that this re-aggravation is not as serious as the initial injury and Cueto hopes to miss only the minimum time on the DL, meaning he would be available on June 16. The Reds' ace has been sidelined a little over half of the season so far all told.

Chris Heisey (out since April 29) and Sean Marshall (out since June 22) are both rehabbing in the minors but remain without timetables for their returns. Since this is Marshall's second stint on the DL for shoulder discomfort this year, he took a different approach this time in rehab, which was to shut it down as far as throwing and focus on strengthening the shoulder instead. The first time he hit the DL he began throwing again almost immediately, and the problem soon resurfaced. I think the organization might be too aggressive in rehabbing pitcher injuries, because re-injury seems to really be a big problem over the last two years. I'm not qualified to question the guys who do this for a living, but there have been a good deal of head-scratching situations with injury management from the Reds.

Left field has been filled adequately, even admirably, by Xavier Paul and Derrick Robinson in Heisey's absence, but the bullpen has been a different story without Marshall, as there is no one in the 'pen to get lefties out unless the Reds happen to face lefties in the 9th inning and have the lead at the time.

In the minor leagues, C Konrad Schmidt returned to action for AAA Louisville on June 24. He had missed 12 days with a strained lower back. IF Jason Donald was activated from the DL on June 6. He had been out since April 28 with an unlisted injury. RP Mike MacDougal was released.

At A+ Bakersfield, RP El'Hajj Muhammad went on the 7-day DL on June 3; the injury was not given. C Yovan Gonzalez was placed on the 7-day DL on June 7 with an unlisted injury. C Chris Berset returned from the DL on June 3 also, but a transaction was never listed for when he went on the DL or why, so I don't know how long he was out. I love that minor league reporting... Also 1B Dominic D'Anna was released.

At A- Dayton, SP Sal Romano was placed on the 7-day DL on May 31 due to a bruised foot and returned on June 6, spending only the minimum time on the DL. RP(?) Jesus Adames was placed on the 7-day DL retroactive to June 4 for a strained calf.

AA Pensacola to this point in the season still has not had a single player go on the DL.
