On this day in 1921, Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis suspended eight members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox for their involvement in throwing the 1919 World Series against the Reds. The "eight men out" were "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, Chick Gandil, Eddie Cicotte, Buck Weaver, Happy Felsch, Fred McMullin, Swede Risberg, and Lefty Williams.
On this day in 1960, the Reds signed Tony Perez.
On this day in 1978, former Red Gene Moore died in Jackson, MS at the age of 68. Moore made his big league debut with Cincinnati in 1931 when he appeared in four games for the club. He did not play in the majors in 1932 and resurfaced with the Cardinals in 1933. Moore would play in the major leagues for the next 12 years and even made the NL All-Star team with the Boston Braves in 1937. He retired after the 1945 season. His father, Gene Sr., pitched in five games for the Reds in 1912.
On this day in 1982, Jose Arredondo was born in San Pedro de Macoris, San Pedro de Macoris, D.R. The town on the southern end of the Dominican Republic is famous for producing a plethora of major league players. Former Reds Mariano Duncan and Tony Fernandez as well as Johnny Cueto are just a few of the ballplayers from San Pedro de Macoris.
On this day in 1994, Reds Hall of Famer Gordy Coleman died in Cincinnati at the age of 59. During his eight seasons in the Queen City, Coleman slashed .271/.322/.447 (106 OPS+) in more than 2500 plate appearances. He was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 1972.
On this day in 2003, the Reds released Jose Guillen. Cincinnati would re-sign Guillen on the very next day. He had one of his most productive stretches as a ballplayer during the first half of 2003 with the Reds when he slashed .337/.385/.629 (165 OPS+) in nearly 350 plate appearances. Cincinnati traded him to Oakland at the deadline for a package that included Aaron Harang.
