This Week in JPEGs Tournament: Alone vs. The Golem Vanquishes El Niño Destructor

New, 12 comments

The JPEG Tournament continues with the darkest moment of the season pitted against one of the most violent moments of the season.

The feelings just don't feel as much as they felt before. I open my mouth to scream, but the shrieks are lost in the impossibly wide void between myself and the universe. I'm an inch tall and miles away. The weight of existence is too much. It furrows my brow and bows my back. I'm exhausted and feel like I'm dreaming, but I can't sleep. I'm all alone.

Or, I guess, I was. I drew this one the night the Reds lost to the Pirates in the Wild Card game. I was also listening to Kraftwerk on a loop for like six straight hours.

The Golem Vanquishes El Niño Destructor

This one is about as inside-jokey as it gets. The Golem, of course, refers to the stone-faced and clay-shouldered young catcher, Devin Mesoraco. El Niño Destructor is former Red and long-time antagonist in your child's night-terrors, Juan Francisco.

These two collided on a play at first when Mesoraco hit a ground ball and Francisco attempted to field the throw. The original post is here. I remember having a lot of fun conceptualizing what kind of monster El Niño Destructor would be. I settled on a derivation of a chupacabra and Goro from Mortal Kombat.
