On this day in 1936, former Red Don Nottebart was born in West Newton, MA. Nottebart had two good years as a relief pitcher with the Reds in 1966 and '67.
On this day in 1969, former Red Al Bridwell died in Portsmouth, OH at age 85. Bridwell made his major league debut with the Reds in 1905. Cincinnati traded him to the Boston Beaneaters (Braves) after that season for Jim Delahanty.
On this day in 1970, former Red Mark Wohlers was born in Holyoke, MA. During his season and a half in Cincinnati, Wohlers missed considerable time due to Tommy John surgery and an anxiety disorder. The Reds flipped Wohlers to the Yankees for pitching prospect Ricardo Aramboles in July of 2001. Wohlers threw very hard and hit 103 MPH in a spring training game in 1995 (Wikipedia).
On this day in 1982, former Red Wily Mo Pena was born in Laguna Salada, Valverde, Dominican Republic. Pena showed great promise as a power hitter, but could never put together a great season at the plate due to his horrendous plate discipline. He was the centerpiece of one of Wayne Krivsky's best trades when the former Reds general manager dealt Pena to the Red Sox for Bronson Arroyo and cash.
On this day in 2007, the Reds traded relief prospect David Shafer and a player to be named later to the Athletics for Kirk Saarloos and a player to be named later.
On this day in 2012, the Reds signed Willie Harris.
