Cairo and Phillips are still ailing, so it'll be Janish and Renteria up the middle. And not how you're probably hoping.
It only took 114 games, but here are the Rockies. You may remember the Rockies from reportedly getting a good chunk of the Reds' farm system thrown at them in an effort to acquire Ubaldo Jimenez. But I watched Ubaldo's first start with the Indians and you know what happened? They LOST. I think the Reds dodged a bullet there.
I'm enjoying seeing the Reds do some experimenting more than I thought I would. This is the time to do it, when you're young. It's easy to get swept up in small samples, but I think there's a lot to be gleaned from these Lower 48 games. If the season ended today, I would be willing to see Todd Frazier step in any time as the fulltime 3B. I would be OK with declaring Yonder Alonso no longer a LF, though I think there's plenty of reason to keep running him out there for the remainder of the season. We don't know much about Dave Sappelt yet - and we're not going to find out much, if anything, today - but I do know that while I think Drew Stubbs will be unfairly maligned for as long as his Reds career lasts, he might be better suited to hitting 6th.
This information is valuable, but it does not help the team achieve better stability in their starting rotation. Beyond Leake and Cueto, I don't have any handle on what kind of pitchers the Reds' current stable of starters are going to be - now or in the near future. That's been Homer Bailey's story for seasons. I would say he's improving, but especially with the bite of injury, it's improvement that's probably slower that most had hoped or are capable of noticing.
