The former CincinNationals welcome the Reds to Washington DC tonight for the start of a 3-game season. I say former because the team that used to boast what seemed like an entire roster full of former Reds is now down to just Adam Dunn on the active roster. Dunner is having a whale of a year in Washington, batting .274/.379/.537 with 10 HR, but he doesn't come close to their best hitter Ryan Zimmerman. The 25-year old third baseman is having a delightfully good season, batting .311/.411/.602, all three items are good enough to be in the top 7 in the NL and he leads the league with a 1.014 OPS. Add in some gold glove quality defense and you've got yourself a serious MVP candidate right there, though Scott Rolen should still start at 3B in the all-star game, because I said.
The Nationals have a solid though not outstanding offense, but with Aaron Harang on the mound, that doesn't really matter. Harang's unpredictability has been frustrating this season. At times he'll look good for an inning or two and then suddenly he's being swatted all around the stadium. We keep hoping for him to get better, and while his results have been improved (4.09 ERA in his last 7 starts), he still seems to be getting hit hard. It'd be nice if he could put together a string of good starts in the fashion of Bronson Arroyo (Goodarang? Hargood? AarUnsuck?). Been saying it all year, but I'd love for him to become a force again. Sure would give me confidence about the second half of the season for the Reds.
Lots of Red Reporters will be in attendance tonight, so set your DVRs. Somebody's gonna do something embarrassing.
Go Reds! They're my favorite!
