Free Agents

Jason Schmidt

I have no idea how much of a player the Reds are going to be in the free agent market this offseason, but with a new owner and a new GM I think it's fair to say that we're allowed to dream a little.

Here's a list of declared players. There are some interesting relievers on the list. Octavio Dotel, JC Romero, Arthur Rhodes, Rick White. Kidding on the last one.

Starting pitching is thin, like always, but Jason Schmidt and Ted Lilly are both interesting players. I don't even really know how serious the Reds will pursue a free agent starter though, not with Claussen coming back and Bailey probably coming up at some point. 3/5 of the rotation is set in stone with Harang, Arroyo, and Milton, and I'm guessing they'll keep Lohse which makes for 4 out of 5. It shouldn't be that tough to find a fifth guy in house, and it'd obviously be far cheaper.

There aren't too many middle infielders either. Julio Lugo is out there, but I'm guessing he's headed for a huge payday. Todd Walker is a free agent, but he's always had a bad defensive rep, so I doubt he's the kind of guy WayneK would look at seriously. I don't know much about Tony Graffanino, but if he's a good defender he might be palatable. A lot here depends on what the Reds end up doing with Brandon Phillips obviously. It's easier to find a second baseman than a shortstop.

So you've got the list, who would you like to see in a Reds uniform next season?
