Arizona Fall League Participants

Marc Lancaster has the Reds selections for the AFL:

In case you missed it, the Reds' selections to play in the Arizona Fall League this year are RHP Allan Simpson, RHP Bubba Nelson, 1B Joey Votto, IF Kevin Howard, C Ryan Hanigan and OF Chris Denorfia.

They'll be playing for the Mesa Solar Sox ...

Interesting selections.  I like that Nelson, Votto, Howard, Hanigan, and Denorfia are going, but I'm not sure I agree with the Simpson.  Allan Simpson just turned 28 yesterday, which should be far too old for an AFL spot.  Teams generally want to give this opportunity to up and coming prospects, not aging relief pitchers with huge control issues.

Here is how the Reds 2004 AFL selections have done in 2005:

Todd Coffey: Promoted from AAA Louisville.  At the major league level: 45 IP, 4.80 ERA, 20/7 K/BB

Daylan Childress: Now with the Twins organization.  He's been pretty terrible at the AA level, putting up a 5.72 ERA in 61.1 IP.

Dustin Moseley: Traded to the Angels for Ramon Ortiz.  Has had a rough year, with a 5.03 ERA in 82.1 IP, and a terrible 38/30 K/BB ratio.  Now has shoulder problems and, I believe, is out for the year.

Jesse Gutierrez: Tore his ACL after only 26 games at AA Chattanooga.

Kevin Howard: Hitting .281/.331/.409 in 455 at bats for Chattanooga.

Brian Peterson: Also at Chattanooga, has put up a .271/.324/.412 line.  Has recovered well from a very rough start to the season.

Let's hope this year's crop can do a little better coming out of their time in the AFL.
