I've made it clear in the past that I'm not a big Don Gullett fan. The GARB ran the numbers today to see just how Don Gullett has done in his tenure with the Reds, and it's generally not pretty, especially when it comes to young pitchers.
this does not bode well for the future of a team that wants to develop talent from within the farm system. Perhaps if the Reds decide to stay on the develop young pitchers track they should consider an alternative to Gullett. The good news for now, though, is that the Reds are depending on 3 veterans to pull the weight of the rotation this season, so hopefully Gullett can work some magic with them.
For a team like the Reds, who can't afford to just throw money at their problems, it's imperative to have a coaching staff capable of bringing out the best in young talent. I don't thing Gullett is capable of that. It'll be really interesting to see what kind of year Brandon Claussen has, and if he does well and turns things around then I might be forced to reconsider my opinion. Right now however, I wouldn't mind seeing a change in pitching coaches.
