I've never quite understood the term "position player." "Pitcher" is also a position, isn't it? So I'm not sure what distinction this makes. I've been championing the term "no pitch 'ems" for years, but so far: no luck.
Renteria made his expectations pretty clear in remarks to ESPN Deportes: "I feel happy for the opportunity to keep playing shortstop full time. That was the main reason to accept the offer from the Reds."
However, "opportunity" here could refer either to the job opportunity itself being that of "starting SS" or the chance to compete for the starting job. Unclear.
UPDATE: Maybe it's all sound and fury. Dusty weighs in, hinting at an open audition: "We don’t have a quarterback controversy at short. Everybody plays on my team. They’re both going to play. Janish is younger. Edgar is more experienced. Janish deserves a chance to be my shortstop."ANOTHER UPDATE: Johny Fay tweets: "He was not promised the starting job."
