The Enemy Speaks: Phillies Series

Welcome to this Phillies Series edition of The Enemy Speaks (formerly known as From the Opponents' Feed). Here are the interesting tidbits gleaned from NOT listening to the Brennemen, but...

Barry Larkin will manage Brazilian National Team in World Baseball Classic

Newly-minted Hall of Famer Barry Larkin has been hired to manage the Brazilian team in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. Given the short and relatively scant history of baseball in Brazil, I'm pretty confident in saying that their best hope is having him bat lead-off and play SS.

Eric Davis produces, featured in BET's "Harvard Park" documentary

Tomorrow at 11 a.m., BET debuts a documentary produced by Eric Davis and childhood friend Daryl Strawberry about Harvard Park, a small park in the bowels of southcentral Los Angeles. ED took Barry Larkin to fair Harvard Park in the offseason once. Said Larkin: "The park was in the 'hood.' There were rocks all over the place, and I'm thinking, 'All right, we're playing in the big leagues and this is where we're working out?' But there was a saying -- 'If you can do it here, you can do it anywhere. If you can field ground balls here, you can field them anywhere. If you can hit here, if you can survive in this situation here, you can survive anywhere.'"

Filling the void in Reds-centric video games

Had baseball video games existed during the 1970s beyond those that required taping a "baseball field" transparency over your TV screen, I'm sure there would have been licensed products featuring members of the Big Red Machine. But from the beginning of the advent of video games (mid-80s?) until the present day, there hasn't been a truly nationally-marketable household megastar playing for the Reds during prime years.

Through the Sand Lots of Time, Davey Johnson's Locker

Baseball fans are self-indulgent nostalgia junkies, it's true. There's no Ken Burns Football, no leatherhead re-enactors (at least for the purposes of this argument), no sacred talisman of memorabilia that matches the Honus Wagner card. This has a lot to do with the sheer longevity of the sport, but at least a little to do the meditative, journal-keeping Costasian nerds it attracts.

MGoBlog Larkin Retrospective

For folks like me who only remember Barry from the 90s onward, this is a neat look at the only time of his life he lived outside of the 513 environs. I figured he was good in college, of course, but it's neat to see that he went to UMich on a football scholarship and, as the legend goes, "Schembechler liked watching him play baseball so much that he told Barry to focus on it." Which I'm sure is 100% true, of course. And Barry was on the 1984 Olympic team, which was also news to me. Seems like you people would enjoy this article, so here it is.

What I wanted to say about Barry

I don't have fancy stats or even very good writing skills, but here's what I wanted to say about Barry Larkin, and why he should be in the Hall of Fame.

A Case for Barry

A look at Barry Larkin's case for the Hall of Fame using statistics that account for his total combination of hitting, fielding, and playing time.
