Shades of the future?
Freel and Patterson are in the same lineup, but Patterson is batting leadoff.  Looks like he's gonna be our sparkplug this year.

He has some hits in his limited ST ABs.
stats

He's been on first base ten times but only attempted one SB.  That's not quite what I expected.

By the way, it's not Howie pitching, it's Kyle.  Howie plays 2B for the Los Angeles Angeles of Angelheim.

My bad. I stopped and thought for a minute..
..and that's what got me in trouble.

BTW, it's a first inning beatdown of Not-Howie.

by Fat Vegas Alan on Mar 25, 2008 1:37 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

They probably could have scored more
but Dunn walked and clogged up the bases, slowing the run scoring process down.

Not-Howie has had a lot of those
ST and all, but they're really concerned that smoke and mirrors might not work again for their no. 3 starter.  If only they had a chance to nab a league-average innings eater.

by ken on Mar 25, 2008 2:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Is this a good pattern?
BP is our leading base stealer.  Will we see what just happened a lot this year?  BP gets on, steals second with Dunn at the plate.  Dunn gets intentionally walked.

And, is that ok if we do see it a lot?

Dunn
Did they just intentionally walk Dunn in a spring training game? Do they really need to practice that?

by Brian B on Mar 25, 2008 2:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The Wagon is looking stellar
4 IP, 4 Ks, 5 H, 1 BB only 1 R.  A few too many runners, but the score is what matters.

It'd be nice to see him
Will Carroll had this to say in the team health report:

Volquez's ridiculous hair doesn't affect his injury risk, but it does allow anyone to notice that he has a "pop" in his delivery. Some of his energy goes up--as does his hair at that point--which often leads to the ball being up in the zone. While it's not as pronounced as it once was, even the trip back to Single-A didn't make his mechanics ideal. He's still young and his stuff is still filthy, but he's facing a major innings increase in a ballpark that won't help his confidence.

Nice job by whoever submitted the Dunn question to Carroll, btw.

by ken on Mar 25, 2008 2:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

he's got 5 Ks through 5
That gives him 26 in 20 spring innings and only 4 walks.  I know it's only Spring, but NICE!

Looks like he's going to pitch the 6th
Not sure how many pitches he's thrown, but if I'm not mistaken, this will be his longest outing of the Spring.

I guess they wanted to give Edinson
an AB with men on.  Turns out he isn't so clutch.

by Slyde on Mar 25, 2008 2:51 PM EDT   0 recs

alright, listen chickens
im not all that pissed off about patterson anymore. im consigned to the fact that he's going to man that post for a while. first, lots of centerfielders are shitty hitters, and he is a really good  defender. second, hell, who knows, he could regain his 03-04 form when he was a decent power-hitting cf, and a move to great american could facilitate that. He'll probably never OBP higher than 320, and he'll still lead off, but it's one guy and that's not likely to ruin the team on its own.

just to clarify
the bet is that Castro and Patterson are both in the opening day starting lineup--not that they bat in any particular order.

BTW, I hate that we as Reds fans have so many of these damn conversations that end with: "Who knows, maybe he can regain the form he had that one fluke half season a few years ago" or "Maybe he'll be a completely different player in GABP?"

I'm a man of genius. I can afford to drool on you.

by Man Mountain on Mar 25, 2008 10:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I hear ya. (Again.)
But don't you think that fans of almost any team other than Yankees Red Sox and Mets have these conversations?

Tonight I was looking for some starting pitching to replace the wonderful duo of Chris Carpenter and Curt Schilling that Yahoo auto-drafted for me and I discovered that the Astros are hoping that Brandon Backe can fill their #2 spot. Seriously?

And I haven't checked in on the Mets in awhile but last I heard even they of the $115+ M payroll are going to have to patch together a lineup for the first part of the season while they wait for Moises Alou to come hobbling back.  Eww.  I'd almost rather have Corey Patterson and Todd Coffey what-if conversations than consider a 42 year-old's recovery from hernia surgery.

by Fat Vegas Alan on Mar 25, 2008 11:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

no, I don't
I don't believe that 28 other fan bases are trying to talk themselves into accepting a leadoff hitter with a career .298 OBP.

by Fat Vegas Alan on Mar 26, 2008 1:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The best part of that
Almost a month of "tearing it up", and he walked ONCE. And it was intentional.

by jch24 on Mar 26, 2008 9:47 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah, but
he was batting 3rd, 5th, and 6th during that time.  It's not his JOB to WALK!

Just a quick note
I think the Gil cut has been overlooked by some.  He is easily the most versatile reserve the Reds could put on the 25 man roster.  I really like his defense and strong arm, and I think with the right adjustments he could hit a little bit at the Major League level.
suggestions, anyone?

by BobbyO on Mar 25, 2008 3:39 PM EDT   0 recs

Well I'd rather have
Jerry Gil on the team than Juan Castro.

But then again, I'd rather have Kaz Matsui's issue than Juan Castro, so there ya go.

by cesarhernandez on Mar 25, 2008 4:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

expound
you need to tell people what kaz matsui's issue is. You need to come out and say that he has an anal fissure, which means that he's suffering from extra assholes. you should just come out and say that instead of leaving us in suspense. He's gone and ripped himself a new asshole. Is what happened.

I decided to be polite
about it (for a change). I figured someone else would step up to the plate and provide all the painful, graphic details. And you didn't disappoint.

That must be one nasty anal fissure though. Usually, those don't require surgery.

Claudio Vargas anyone?
The Brewers released him today, viewing him as their seventh-best starter. I've always liked him -- more than I should stats suggest -- and thought the Reds should have grabbed him off waivers from the Nats three years ago. Of course, I'd have liked to have seen the Reds snag Darrell Rasner off waivers from the Nats, too, but instead the Yankees got him.

Anyway, anyone for Vargas as a No. 4 or 5 SP or long man out of the pen?

vargas
the only autographed baseball card ive ever received in a pack was a claudio. So i'm all for it. maybe i could get him to sign it again.

I would only want him if
the Reds could stash him in AAA.  I Harang, Arroyo, EV, Cueto, Fogg, Belisle, Bailey, and maybe even Matt Maloney ahead of him on the depth chart of starting pitching.  Richie Gardner would be right behind him.

No way Maloney would be ahead of him
I know it's spring training, but he was obviously extremely overmatched. I'd take Vargas ahead of Maloney in a heartbeat and wouldn't really object to using him over Bailey this season. I'd put him about on par with Fogglisle.

Miss a day miss a lot.
Holy crap. I know I haven't checked in much since Thursday, but good Lord the number of messages I've had to read through tonight. I think there was 25 new diaries in the last week. I've been stuck at work actually working this week so I got a little behind.

You can definitely tell we are T-5 days until OD.

See some of you OD at BDubs (I think.)

Someone's actually interested in Stanton?
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/20080326_Phillies_Notebook__Mystery__intrigue_as_deadli ne_nears_for_Phillies_final_roster_spots.html

Helms and Stanton make virtually the same amount of money this season. Helms is a career .280/.359/.476 hitter vs. lefties and is capable of playing both 1st and 3rd. And, perhaps as a fun bonus, he's the nephew of former Red Tommy Helms.

Personally, I'd take Helms over Phillips or Cabrera, especially if we get to not have Stanton on the team anymore.

by Geki on Mar 26, 2008 10:54 AM EDT   0 recs

i'd make that deal right now
