Quick question
since I'm too lazy to look it up, does anyone know how many times we see the Bucos in the regular season this year (and everyone in the central for that matter). Feels like we get them and the Brewers about fifty times a year.

18 against the Brewers
and 15 against the rest of the teams in the Central.

Thanks Slyde
I'm assuming that from one year to the next we get to face one team in the central three more times than the others.

Not sure
I think the reason for the difference is because the NL has more teams than the AL, so when interleague happens, an NL team has to play an NL team, so it throws the numbers off.

WHY!!?!
Why does it always seem like we are facing the "hot team" when we get them the extra 3 games..

But Volquez has had himself a nice little spring too.

I will say that I'm very happy that Hamilton will be in a different league when he starts kicking ass this season.

I saw that too.... hitting over .500
But then I remembered he did the same thing here last year in Cincy.  Made the team because of it.  And he had a nice year.  But he didn't keep hitting over .500.  Now, Hamilton may tear it up in Texas this year, but his amazing spring is no guarantee of future results.

Cueto on the otherhand.... his awesome spring means ROY and CY awards forthcoming.

So much for that
It's 6-0 in the 3rd now, against a less than stellar lineup.  The good news is that in the past, Fogg would be one of 5 people fighting for 3 spots.  Now he's one of three fighting for 1 (so it appears).  Better to have one #5 starter than 3 of them.

Hmm...
But would that mean that you'd rather have one #5 than 3 #4s?

Or would that all just be #2?

Pirates lineup
Is that their best lineup or their backups?  Maybe they want Fogg to make the rotation.

How do people feel about
Ede and Votto not hitting this spring?

by The Crushinator on Mar 18, 2008 1:34 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm not concerned
EdE tore it up last Spring (.310/.355/.493) and then laid a big fat egg in April (.221/.294/.260).  I put little stock into what the spring numbers mean.  Each player is trying to accomplish something different while they are there.  As long as they start to find their rhythm by the time the Spring starts wrapping up, it shouldn't be a problem.

Uh-oh
Fogg gives up 6 runs (3 earned) in 3 innings to the weakest hitting team in the NL (and without Jason Bay in the lineup).  Now who's our fifth starter?  Can Bailey or Belisle step up?

Do we think
that Fistbands and Sweaterpants will really go with a trio of Volquez, Cueto and Bailey. My guess is that they will go with a veteran for that last spot no matter how bad his spring numbers are.

Fogg
I think that a start like this every few times out is what I expect from Fogg.  I wouldn't say this eliminates him from contention.  I think, while he may suck, he's our best option right now.

How many innings does Bray have to pitch?
.... before we're allowed to start stroking our chin and raising an eyebrow at his performances this spring?

Is this the year we finally get that shut down lefty reliever we traded away AK-47 and Left Eye Lopez for?

by TheC on Mar 18, 2008 3:09 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

More than three.
Nevertheless, I don't need a "shut down lefty reliever".  I would settle for "sufficiently better than Mike Stanton to cause his release," at this point.

It seems that he hasn't pitched much.  Might he go to "extended Spring Training" or does he have too much pride and veteran presence for that kind of thing?

Has he really only pitched 3 innings so far?
OK... never mind my dumbass comment then.  I thought I remembered him being run out there a few more times than that.

But.. its still nice to see 2 more shutout, hitless innings today.

I was surprised myself that he had seen so little work.

For me, I think he already falls into the category of "good enough so that it results in the release of Mike Stanton," but an inanimate carbon rod would probably qualify also.

he got a number of starts in 2006
which is really strange.  A team has to be really hurting to give multiple starts to a pitcher in his mid to late 30s, who has spent his entire Big League career working in relief.

Strength of Schedule?
Fogg's pitched against:
  • the Pirates twice (without Bay)
  • the D-Rays
  • the Indians (without Hafner)
  • the Twins (without Morneau).
Belisle pitched against:
  • the Yankees (the day Fogg blanked the Pirates' AA team)
  • the D-Rays (outpitching Fogg)
  • the Indians (getting outpiched, though the last round through the lineup for Fogg was against AAA players)
  • the Twins (pitched equally)
Bailey's pitched against the Yankees, Red Sox (twice), and D-Rays.

Today should've been a day for Belisle to pitch.  I still think that the Reds would be better off with Belisle than with Fogg.  I think that Belisle will start at AAA because the Reds can send him there.  It'll be a numbers game for Belisle.

But I think Bruce has now struck out his last 10 at bats.  OK... maybe that's not accurate, but it seems he has been striking out a lot lately including 2 more today.  I think our phenom is heading to Louisville.  I'm a little bummed that our two hyped heroes both seem to be struggling.  But that is because I want satisfaction NOW!!!!

Our nightmares will be coming true...
For those of us who thought we were overreacting to the signing of Patterson, here's what Dusty has to say:  "I always thought he'd be a good leadoff man," Baker said. "He's got all the tangibles to be a leadoff man. Maybe sometime you're not ready. When he came up, he didn't know how to bunt. They said he was going to be a 30-30 man and it got in his head."

More agreeable Fistbandisms
from Hal:

The possibility of three left-handers in the bullpen doesn't faze Baker, and once again he turned to veteran manager Jim Leyland for an outlook.  "The Pirates always had three left-handers in the bullpen when Leyland was there and they were winning," he said. "I've found that more left-handers can get righties out than right-handers get lefties out."

With Affeldt out of the rotation pot, the Reds are without a left-hander in the projected rotation, no matter who survives.  "I'd prefer a left-hander, but again, you want the best man," said Baker. "You'd prefer one, definitely. But as I recall, didn't the Red Sox go to the World Series without a lefty?"

And more importantly:

Asked about being back in baseball after a year off, he said, "I enjoyed spending time with my son, my wife, my daughter and my dog. My dog is 11 years old and I miss my dog. That's the best woman in my life."  Baker's 9-year-old son heard that comment and quickly said, "I'm going to call mom and tell her."

"I love my mom, my sisters, my daughters, everybody, and it's no slight on anybody, but my dog (Bailey, a German short-haired pointer) ... well, my wife knows how I feel about my dog. My wife ain't never run and got no pheasant for me. Best hunting dog I ever had and don't they always talk about man and his dog? Ain't no slight on any women in my wife."

by ken on Mar 19, 2008 8:13 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Get Dusty in class
Day 1: Look up the defintition of "tangible."

Day 2: Consider how the admission "[My dog is] the best woman in my life" might quite understandably be perceived as a slight to your mother, wife, daughters, every living female close to you, etc.

Day 3: Shut up and go away

computers
The anti-computers article blows my mind. For those who don't know last year the Chicago Tribune writers didn't like PECOTA's 72 win projection for the Sox. So they railed against it in the predictable 'what-about-heart?' columns.

The the Sox proceeded to finish with exactly 72 win. The computer got it exactly right.

So this year the Trib's writers are again miffed at PECOTA's projection. Is it too much to expect them to at least acknowledge that, "yeah the computer did get it right last year"?

by Red Menace on Mar 20, 2008 3:22 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

well, he did, really
from morrissey: "Baseball Prospectus was dead on last season, when it predicted the Sox, whom it saw as aging quickly, would win only 72 games. That's exactly what happened.

That the Sox dropped from 90 victories in 2006 to 72 games last season was one of the shocks of the baseball season. But not to Baseball Prospectus, and the people who run it deserve their props."

The problem isn't that he didn't acknowledge BP, it's that he knows very well that he railed on PECOTA last year and was dead wrong, yet chose to write the same column a year later, just begging to get his ass kicked again.
