I'm in the midst of a move back to Columbus (from Atlanta), so the front page might be a little empty for a few days, but here are a few links I've come across lately you might enjoy.

Brady Anderson uses the internet to pick up women. Seriously funny stuff. Maybe Ryan Freel (or whoever our mystery Craigslist poster was last spring) could pick up some tips.
New blog (or new to me anyway): Cincy Reds Cards. I haven't collected cards in any serious way in probably fifteen years, and yet they still hold my interest. Good read if you're like me in that respect.
CTrent is back. And annoyingly doesn't have an RSS feed. Someone oughta bug him about that (or point me in the direction of his feed if I'm mistaken and it does exist).
JinAZ has an interesting post on future payroll commitments for the Reds. They have $50 million already committed towards 2009, but that actually doesn't sound too bad. The payroll has been cleaned up quite a bit the past two years, and should only get better if Griffey comes off the books. He is coming off the books right? Anyone think the Reds might pick up his option?

Re: Griffey in 2009

It wouldn't shock me if he produces this year. He is making 12.5 million this year. 16.5 option for 2009.... but if we don't pick it up, its a 4 million buy out. If he produces basically you need to ask, can you get a replacement for 8.5 million? If not, you may as well pay Griffey his 16.5 million as its just like paying him his 12.5 from 2008.

That makes no sense.

You ask if Griffey is worth $12.5 million in 2009. That's the only qualifications you need. We're paying him at least $4 million either way, so yes, the question shouldn't be whether or not he's worth $16.5 million. But there's no logic in asking if he's worth $8.5 million simply because we're paying him $12.5 million this year and he has a $4 million buyout either way for 2009.

I think

If Jr produces and the Reds have a winning record Krivsky will try to restructure his deal for 09 and bring him back. I also think it will depend on if Dunn will sign an extension the Reds think is acceptable and the progress of Dorn. If Dunn wont sign an extension and Dorn is not ready for the big leagues the Reds will have a hole in the outfield and lineup. Other than Dorn I dont believe there is anyone else in the minors right now who can produce enough offense to be an everyday corner ML outfielder.

griffey

i think griffey's option depends on a few things. its easy to say if he produces they should pickup the option, but everyone knows he is just one game from ending his season. the development of bruce, hopper, and dickerson will play a factor. if two of them prove they can make an impact this year, the he may not get picked up. the final factor is talks with dunn. if he gets re-signed can the reds really stick with all these lefties? all-in-all i dont think they pick it up. hopefully they can find an acceptable trade this spring or summer and avoid the 4 mill hit this winter

If he produces and stays injury free I see Castellini making sure the option is picked up.

Now if Griffey falls to another injury or has a season that shows his age, I see Griffey staying with the Reds but with a restructured contract. I think job security is more important to Griffey than a $4 mil buyout. I also see Griffey spending the remainder of his career with the Reds or Mariners only.

BP's #1 prospect in all of baseball. Homer at #9, Votto at #21. Not bad, 3 prospects in the top 21. Honorable mention--Cueto at 41.

I think CF would suffer next year with out melkey out there. i don't know if i would agree with ronster that this will be a breakout year for him offensively... but last time I checked-- they don't need huge offensive numbers from melkey.. but it's not like the guy is a hole in the lineup.

I actually tend to agree with ronster. melkey could certainly have a breakout year this year, despite what jscape calls his "wet pasta for a stick." besides, remember when jscape thought we'd better off with tony fernandez than jeter? yeah right, petard.

Prospect lists

Keith Law and Kevin Goldstein released their respective Top 100 lists yesterday. Like last night's debate there are no raging disagreements, though Law had the nerve to put Longaria ahead of Bruce and doesn't think as highly of Votto. Goldstein lists Bruce, Homer, Votto and Cueto at 1, 9, 21 and 41; Law has them at 2, 9, 56, and 30.

While a few teams have more prosects on the lists only the Rays (I think) had a quartet with rankings this high. The other NL Central teams have relatively poor showings in either depth or quality, though in Milwaukee's case it's understandable as some of their best prospects have graduated to the MLB recently. The Astros have only one guy in Goldstein's list (J.R. Towles, a catcher), which may explain their go-for-broke attitude.

Has anyone seen the TV schedule?

It seems to me that FSN's schedule was released by this time last year but I have not seen or heard anything regarding the '08 Reds.

Normally I would go and try to find this and prolly even post it for ya'll if I could end up finding it but my computer/connection is all slow and shit this morning.

I am guessing they are going to show every game

except weekday afternoon games (unless it is the Cubs, they won't show the Saturday afternoon games because of Fox.

Has anyone heard

anything about the Reds planned screwing of the fans, er, I mean, Opening Day ticket packages?

I heard that single game seats would be going on sale in a few weeks, but I've heard nothing about O.D.

Wondering if I am going to have to invest in another 13 game package to get seats to the one that I really care about.

I think we'll pick up that 2009 option as Griffey's last hurrah. He has an outside shot of catching Mays (very outside) and it would be something the Reds could leverage to put fans in the seats.
