Nice line up tonight.
I see LaLoser is still batting the pitcher 8th. Tony 's a crackhead.

by Madville on Sep 12, 2007 7:24 PM EDT reply actions

In leagues without a pitcher
generally the worst hitter bat's 8th, and the 9th spot is used as almost a second lead off spot.  There is a website that generates lineups based on OPS, and tells the user what batting order should create the most runs.  The pitchers almost always bat 8th.  Of course in the NL the advantage of the pitcher batting 9th is, he has less at bats, and the difference between 8th and 9th in the order, could decide mean removing teh pitcher an inning earlier for a pinch hitter.

by justin0070000 on Sep 12, 2007 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Well...
...people are always saying they want a manager who is willing to think outside the box.

The stat-heads say that your worst hitter should hit eighth, not ninth, to maximize run production.  So it's not like he's pulling this out of thin air.  I'm kind of impressed that he'd be willing to do it, because most managers wouldn't, no matter what the stats say.

But can you imagine what the guy batting after the pitcher must have thought, the first time he saw the lineup?

I blame steroids
LaRussa's winning percentage is enhanced by PEDs.  Too many of the guys that have been tainted by the 'roids allegations have played under him.  Too many for it to not merit some kind of investigation anyway.

by Brendanukkah on Sep 12, 2007 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions

When was the last time anyone
has actually seen LaLoser laugh? There was a supposed sighting in 1991 and again in 2002. He's kind a ghoulish. Mabye Tony's the 'roid man...the go to guy.

By the way Pete talks to his players too..but that doesn't make him a great manager.

'85 MVP vote
That was Parker's big bounceback year following his coke-induced slump from 80-84. He's complained for years that he should have won, which has clearly reached the ear of Thom. In some ways it's surprising he didn't--first in RBI, fifth in batting, second in hits, first in doubles, second in home runs.

On the other hand he played corner outfield and his defense wasn't what it was. McGee led the league in average (and in singles), stole 56 bases at 77% and played gold glove centerfield. It's an interesting case. McGee's team won, but was loaded. Parker carried a weaker Reds team to Almostland. Cobra stole 5 bases and was thrown out 13 times and was only fifth in the league in OPS+ (this had nothing to do with the voting but we can appreciate it now). Most likely the voters were punishing him for his drug years.

Dwight Gooden, who finished 4th in '85 also had a pretty good case: 24-4 277 IP 268 K 1.53 0.97.

Besides '85 and his '78 MVP win, Parker's next best MVP campaigns were thrwarted by Reds. He finished 3rd to Morgan in '75 and 3rd to Foster in '78.

injury report
From MLB.com:
Reds center fielder Josh Hamilton exited early from Wednesday's game vs. the Cardinals with a strained right hamstring.

Hamilton ran out a ground ball to third base leading off the fifth inning, then limped and hobbled to the dugout after touching first base. He was examined by the trainers in the Reds' dugout after the play.

...The 26-year-old Hamilton has been bothered by the sore hamstring for the past few weeks and he missed two starts over the weekend because of it. The Reds said he would be examined again on Thursday.

Hamilton, the former overall No. 1 Draft pick of the Devil Rays in 1999, is playing in his rookie season after a nearly four-year layoff because of drug abuse issues. Health problems, ranging from a stomach ailment to a sprained wrist, have put him on the disabled list for extended stints already this season.

The Reds also lost Alex Gonzalez to a sore left knee during the game. Gonzalez exited before the fourth inning and was replaced by Jeff Keppinger.

What to do with Dunn
This is real easy....

Start Bruce in AAA, bring him up as an injury fill-in when Griffey or Hamilton finds the DL.  Wherever he's at, you have to get him AB's, and you can get him 250-300 of them in The Show that way without burning a full year of service time.  At the end of the season, let Griffey walk, lock Dunn for a few more years, and go with Dunn-Hamilton-Bruce across the OF.

BTW, if you're letting Dunn walk, Bruce would play RF and Griff would shift to LF.  Bruce is regarded as a fine defensive player in CF, and profiles as an excellent defender in right long-term.  Griff is....well.....not.

Actually...
After the demotion to AAA, he really started showing up a lot on the highlight reels at MLB.com.  I think he is actually a pretty decent defensive 3B now.
If Krivsky doesn't exercise Adam Dunn's 2008 option, I'm a Mets fan until they fire him.

Yeah. Read the article...

Here's the quote I liked:

After committing six errors in his first 31 games before being demoted, he's committed only six more in the 91 games since being recalled. He's also become a staple of the "Baseball Tonight" Web Gems segments, making diving plays and throws from his knees nightly.

On Tuesday, Mackanin said he's seen Encarnacion throw out more players from his knees since he's taken over the club than he had previously in his entire career.

"That's the thing I'm (most) proud of. I worked hard in the offseason and I'm doing good this season," Encarnacion said. "I was so happy with my defense, I wanted to get better. I feel great with my defense. I'm very confident in my defense."

Yep
Freel, Hopper, and Keppinger for two of the right-handed spots on the bench.

EdE's smile
I wonder if this article by CTR is a response to McCoy's jab at EdE a couple months ago when he said that EdE never looks happy to be playing.  He seems to emphasize the fact that Edwin was all smiles, doesn't he?

I know what you mean
For some reason, I find myself really rooting for EdE.  He's one player that I have to admit that I have a hard time being objective about.
