Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Friday Quick Hits

  • Someone really needs to build a site like this for the Reds. I've actually kicked around the idea in the past, but it would be a pretty massive undertaking.
  • A blog called Shysterball has a pretty optimistic look at the Reds. It's a good read, but someone should tell the writers that the Reds have actually generally had pretty great bullpens since the time of the Nasty Boys. These recent years have been the aberration.
  • Mackanin:  "I just hope they judge me on what I'm doing," Fair enough. He certainly deserves consideration, but I think it's going to be an outsider. I really have no clue what the Reds are going to do in any situation anymore, but it seems like Castellini wants a big name, which I think might be a mistake when they have an in house guy in Billy Hatcher who would probably do just fine.
  • The 2004 Reds had a lot in common with this year's Brewers. It's kind of sad the way they've fallen apart. Definitely would have preferred seeing them in the playoffs as opposed to the Cubs, but I'm not giving it to the Cubs just yet with St. Louis lurking. Amazing how they have hung around, but I suppose it's not all that tough in this division.
  • MLB has a lot of problems when it comes to their Florida teams. There's a very real chance the Marlins aren't going to have anywhere to play in just a few years.

It is sad about the Brewers
Jeff Suppan hasn't been the best No.3 Starter for them, '07{8-11, 4.78, 1.51WHIP} but you can't expect much more from him Career{114-112, 4.62ERA, 1.42WHIP}, Then Chris Capuano has sucked bad all season and they depened on him and Sheets to be the One two punch in their rotation. Ned Yost also isn't the smartest manager in the world how do you play Kevin Mench{.265/.298/.423} and even Billy Hall{.256/.321/.469} over Cory Hart{.285/.344/.485}. Obviously the future looks very bright with all the young talent they have and I would love to see them in the playoffs over the Cubs in the Cardnials.
If the Reds are tied with the Cubs/Brewers/Cardnials when there is 5 games left in the season. Zach will join the band wagon

Shysterball
can be entertaining, but the analysis is often wanting.  Maybe I'm biased bc he lives in Columbus but admits to not following the Reds.
  • He's written positively about The Trade before (he links to it), and not very convincingly.  My biggest beef is that he can't/won't recognize that the Reds gave up way too much value for relief pitching - relief pitching that was supposed to help in the WC hunt last year.  Glossing over that by saying the Reds were "pretenders" last year ignores that they finished 3.5 games out and were in the thick of the race the whole way.
  • I don't see Bobby Livingston making the rotation next year with a torn labrum and all.  And Belisle is certainly better than a potential no. 5, as he suggests.
  • To the extent that he credits the recent winning to Phillips is wrong.  BP has been good all year.  In fact, his first-half OPS is significantly higher than the second half.
  • To say that Mackanin has earned the managerial job after 50 games is intellectually lazy.

re: shysterball
I've butted heads with him on BBTF after they posted one of his pro-Trade posts. He doesn't follow the Reds but depends on a Reds-fan friend of his to give him banana-phone quality insight.
Where have you gone Webb Alert chick?

RedsCards.com
Hi JD,
Thanks for noticing TwinsCards.com.  I have also kicked around the idea of making a RedsCards.com, and have had a couple of people say it would be cool, but would take a long time.  I would love to undertake this mission, but have little contacts in the collector world.  Do you know of a Reds collector who has a scanner and lots of time to spend building a very cool site?

Mackanin has never seemed to be
Castellini's choice. & As much as I like Billy Hatcher for a lot of strong reasons, I think that if BC was considering Hatch, he would have given him the shot instead of Pete. Too bad...then again I go back to the Frank Robinson trade, the way Eric Davis was mistreated and so on. Makes me wonder about the Reds and the lack of a black manager. I hope I'm wrong on this but there is a very strong undercurrent of racial bullshit ingrained in the city and (historically, at least) the Reds. What a great time for the Reds to address that, but only if that person was the most talented guy for the job.
Has the game started yet?
