Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

Wednesday Quick Hits

  • Baseball America's blog has some interesting notes on changes that Drew Stubbs and Juan Francisco have made to their approach. Stubbs has been raking lately, and apparently he owes it to simply choking up on the bat.
  • Andy Van Slyke is not above the law.
  • This would really suck, but it's also not terribly surprising. There are certainly some women that would love a ballpark proposal, but I'm guessing they are a huge minority.
  • Frank Williams, the Reds reliever from the 80's, is apparently insane. Kind of sad, but also kind of hilarious.
  • Rick Sutcliffe might be just as big of a nut as Frank Williams.
  • Yes, I picked Juan Castro. That said, I am enjoying the way the Reds have been playing lately (I'm becoming a big Jeff Keppinger fan in spite of Marty drooling all over him), but I'm not sure I'm going to be an advocate of the way the Reds do things until it leads to a winning season. Which isn't terribly demanding I don't think, I'm not even demanding a playoff appearance. Just 82 wins.
  • Paul Daugherty:
Is there anyone more worthy of a daily look-see than Keppinger? The 27-year-old is hitting .377 in 114 at-bats through Tuesday. Is he a late bloomer? Are 114 ABs too short a sample?

Finding out means moving a more proven guy to the bench, probably Edwin Encarnacion, or even Dunn.

I'm not going to let idiots like this ruin Jeff Keppinger for me. I'm just not. And I'm going to try not to let them ruin Adam Dunn for me anymore either. That's easier said than done, but it's worth a shot.

AWESOME
I love the choice of Castro. Well played, sir.

Castro
is a wonderful choice J.D. But you just as easily could have chosen Mark Bellhorn, Mike Stanton, The Rheal Deal, etc. etc. Sad but funny as the other cats tried to take it seriously. Can't wait for Eric Young's take.

on van slyke
i hope he fights it.  i've purchased subway tickets that didn't work here in dc and you know what they make you do?  they make you buy another one and mail the non-working one in with a long form to go with it.

I did that once...
because my card with probably $5 got bent in some way that made it unreadable.  They mailed me a check for the remaining fare...something like a month later.

To add
to the critique of the Daugherty column, here's my favorite part...."Case in point: They brought up lefty Phil Dumatrait and discovered he couldn't pitch in the majors. Maybe that convinces someone important that more starting pitching needs to be found."

That one blew my hair back. No kidding Dock, but before you write that, couldn't you have looked at who is coming up in the free agent market. It was Carlos Zambrano, and now that he's gone it's a bunch of overpriced mistakes. Where do you propose Sweaterpants gather said pitching? Dock is great at talking shit and then telling everyone to be realistic, and then going right back to talking shit again. I know his business and understand phoning a few columns in, but I'm not sure why this one irritated me so much. I don't think Dock really understands or wants to talk about baseball. Just a feeling I get.

That's an interesting point, that Dock might not want to talk baseball. He doesn't irritate me nearly as much in the fall when he writes about the Bengals.

I actually enjoy much of his writing, but it's probably just me. I enjoy the Bengals, but in no way do I foam at the mouth about them the way I do with the Reds. Maybe I don't know enough about football to get pissy with him.

So, is Dumatrait doomed in Cincinnati (media eyes) forever on the basis of 4 starts?

If you judge Dumatrait on the basis of a handful of ML starts, then you probably don't belong judging major league talent for a living.

Send him down and either give him another look see when the rosters expand or next year.

anyone catch extra innings last night?
I missed the game, but caught Daugherty talking about how the Reds 'Lost September' and questioning people who say they go to Reds games in September as to why they go.  This was after a WIN.  I can understand people being negative, but the Reds WON!  This is at least the 4th time I've tuned in, not hearing a pitch in the game, and I've assumed they looked terrible in a loss, but come to find out that they won and Dock is just being negative.  What a turd

It would
I would love to see it. But I've always wondered, why choke up? Why not a smaller bat (Length, and Weight)? I know most of it is mental for Stubbs, but I always found that hitting while choking up was irritating and restricting. If bat control is what you're after for each and every pitch, why not go smaller? Once again, it may only be me, but I always thought choking up was a lame and showy attempt at scrappiness. But to your point, hell yeah, I hope he turns into an absolute stud. The more young talent the better.

Wondering the same thing
I read that article yesterday and wondered what the difference was between choking up and a smaller bat.  In my non-professional experience, a smaller bat seemed to work better than choking up.  Different strokes for different folks?

I dislike him more than I dislike Wayne Krivsky. I don't get how he still has a job. He's not controversial, he's an idiot who is too lazy to actually do his job, resulting in him pretty much constantly being a dick.

I picked Castro as well!

Paul Doc is way too smart for any of us. Dunn has been hot since the all star break and Ede has been solid and has more range at 3rd...ofcourse you bench them! Dude we all know beat writers know there baseball, how about we all just stop bitching about him.

Keppinger
More and more, Keppinger is starting to remind me of Freddy Sanchez, the Pirates 2b.  Makes contact, hits for average, will hit some doubles and the occasional HR, can play all over the infield.  Sanchez finally got a break at 27, hit close to .300 and then won a batting title at 28.  He seems to have be settling in as a .300/.340/.430 type, which isn't great but is pretty solid for a 2b.

Hopefully, Keppinger can take a few more walks than Sanchez, which would boost his value.  The trouble is that 2b isn't open on this team, and I'm not sure that a 770-780 OPS (which is realistic for Kep) is staring 3b material, in the long run (and certainly not starting LF or 1b material).  Does anyone think Kep can become an everyday SS?

Didnt Think this needed its own Diary
But Anyone else hear Krivsky & Gregg Doyel get into it on 1530 AM Today.  Listen to the 8-22 Hour 1 Podcast (About 10 or 12 minutes into the hour) for some pretty good stuff.  Doyel asked some great questions, and openly disagreed with Sweaterpants, but Wayne held his ground.  Wayne really got defensive about Votto, Bruce, Cueto, and sending down Coutlangus.  Also, he completely side-stepped Mike Stanton.

I thought Krivsky did okay
With his history, I wouldn't have him expected to even comment on Cueto and Coutlangus, let alone thoroughly explain them.  At least now we know that Wayne has some sort of reasoning for some of the crazy he moves he makes.

It seemed to me that he was more defensive about the future of the franchise than anything.  Maybe he thinks he won't be here next year?

Stanton
The issue with the Stanton signing was the 2nd year, and that the team already had one 40-yr old, multi-year, $million lefty in the bullpen.

The question should be (and maybe was, I haven't heard the interview yet) why 2 years?

Next time, let's hope the FO let's someone else take the multi-year risk on these types of pitchers.

This is from Lance's blog
But I thought it fit in nicely with the Krivsky stuff.  On the radio today, Wayne gave the reason for demoting Coutlangus as too many walks (citing a BB/9 over 6) and not getting the first batter faced out, which is important when coming in with inherited runners.

% of times first batter is retired
Coutlangus 65%
Weathers 65%
Coffey 60%
Stanton 60%
Burton 56%
Bray 33%
% of inherited runners allowed to score
Burton 19%
Coutlangus 22%
Weathers 30%
Coffey 46%

Yeah, Cooter leads the team in getting the first batter out, and is second in not allowing inherited runners to score.  Nice try, Wayne.

And looking at 2007 WHIP...
Weathers 1.147, 63.7 IP
Burton 1.326, 28.7 IP
Coutlangus 1.527, 36.7 IP
Stanton 1.689, 45 IP
Coffey 1.746, 44.7 IP
Majewski 1.971, 11.7 IP
Gosling 2.111, 27 IP

Yeah, let's just focus on walks...hits matter a lot less.

Wow.
Waynerhead is really speaking out of his arse, isn't he?

He really is showing less familiarity with his own players that even a casual fan would have, and that is even scarier than just being stupid.  It shows gross negligence.

If Krivsky doesn't exercise Adam Dunn's 2008 option, I'm a Mets fan until they fire him.

To Be Fair to Sweaterpants
Maybe Wayne was referring to  his last 5 apperances:

DATE   OPP    W L ERA SV IP  H ER BB SO
JUL 18 @ATL   0 0 3.98 0 0.1 0  0  0  1
JUL 19 @FLA   0 0 3.94 0 0.1 1  0  2  0
JUL 21 @FLA   0 0 4.22 0 0.0 0  1  1  0
JUL 24 MIL    0 0 4.09 0 1.0 0  0  1  0
JUL 25 MIL    0 0 4.09 0 0.0 0  0  1  0

1.2 IP, 5 BB, 1 Hit, 1 K.  Still only one ER in that span.  so take that for what you will.  However, his previous 5 before that he didn't walk a batter.  Maybe he just got a tired arm.  He hasn't pitched nearly this much in his pro career.  If I remember right, wasn't he among the league leaders in apperances?

Absolutely Stupid Wayne....
Too many walks?  How about having six pitchers on the staff with ERAs above 8?  How about having guys like Guardado and Majewski grace the roster, who look like batting practice pitchers?  How about having twelve pitchers on the staff who hitters are batting over .300 off of?  He doesn't mind them, but let some rookie pitcher walk a few, while actually getting people out (which is what a pitcher's job is supposed to be), and they send him down?  No, let's cart Mike Stanton out there, with 5 fewer mph on his fastball, getting lit up like a Christmas tree night after night.  That's apparently what we enjoy watching.  This is utter nonsense.  Whatever defenses I've made of Krivsky in the past, I take back.

Public marriage proposals
IMO, the problem was not that it was at the ballpark, it was that it was so public.  You really have to be sure she wants to marry you before you do that to her.

Some guys do it out of cluelessness.  They just think it would be so neat to propose on television or the big screen.  But some are being manipulative SOBs.  They ask in public, in front of a huge audience, hoping to pressure the woman into saying yes.  That kind of guy deserves popcorn dumped on his head.

I remember when Ahmad Rashad proposed to Phylicia Ayers-Allen during a Thanksgiving Day football game.  She said yes, but you could tell she was pissed off to be put on the spot that way.

And I witnessed another public proposal that didn't turn out well.  On stage at a science fiction convention, actually.  She was a really nice woman, and you could tell she didn't know what to say.  It became clear that they had talked about marriage in private, she had said no, and he proposed in public trying to embarrass her into saying yes.  It didn't work.  The audience clued in, and started yelling things like, "Don't marry him unless you want to!"  "You don't have to say yes!"  "He's a jerk to do this to you!" He was so pissed off.  He yelled at the hecklers, "I spent $10,000 on this ring, are you going to pay for it?!"  She eventually shut down the discussion by saying, "We'll discuss this later, in private."

Definitely think twice about proposing in public, at a ballpark or elsewhere.

Sutcliffe was Right
Sutcliffe is not crazy.  That is the way baseball was back in the days when batters were not 240 pound steroid addicts who tear a pitcher's head off and would take a half hour to round the bases following a dinger (replete with pointing to the skies, kisses, finger twirls, and other forms of conspicuous oneupmanship).  Come on, guys, for those of you old enough remember, tell me you did not take joy in watching Mario Soto headhunt an arrogant batter that was able to get to him.  I always enjoyed watching the Braves come into town back in the day, because I knew there was a good chance Claudell Washington was going to get beaned.  It is too bad that the game is not that way anymore.  It kept the hitters honest.  Now, with few exceptions (apparently, someone grandfathered in Pedro Martinez), you cannot pitch that way anymore.  The hitter is liable to pop you with his 16 inch biceps and the geeks from the commissioner's office will come down on you for trying to balance the distribution on the side of the pitcher.

That comment about benching Dunn in favor of Keppinger is complete insanity. You don't bench a guy who has a direct role in over 20% of your runs.
