Well...
We did have the bases loaded with no outs and only scored one run.  Maybe they were complaining about our inability to capitlize more greatly in that situation?

"Capitalize more greatly"

by Brendanukkah on Jul 8, 2007 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

David Weathers came in with a two-run
cushion....  WHOO-HOO HATTIE! ...and couldn't get three outs without giving up two runs. Part of the bases loaded business was exacerbated by bunt attempts, and the fact that the Diamondbacks have some good pitchers. The offense didn't do a very good job of scoring runs, but today, Weathers did almost as bad a job as he could have.

An "actual quote"
No doubt [He Who Shall Not Be Named], no doubt. Like I was saying earlier, if the Reds could score more than 3 damn runs we wouldn't be talking about this. 16 of the 27 outs for the Reds have been Strikeouts. That's just plain awful. Put the ball in play and good things happen! Look at the D-backs 9th inning. The Reds don't deserve to win this game as a team, but Harang did.

Damn, I was hoping that wouldn't happen until after we traded him.

Also, this game was why you don't take out Adam Dunn for Norris Hopper. Nice defensive play or not, there are balls hit to places other than LF that result in the bullpen blowing the game and Norris Hopper's bat in the lineup instead of Dunn's.

But it payed off today, he did keep the Inning alive and made a great play, I would of put him in Center for Freel if you want better D

...Kept the inning alive after
his lack of hitting ability put him in the situation where he almost grounded into a double play.

And he's not any better than Freel is in CF, so that wouldn't have helped us.

by Zach K on Jul 8, 2007 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopper got way too much love on that play
from Grande.  If that ball is not bobbled by the second baseman, it's a double play.  Sure, Hopper hustled down the line (who wouldn't with the game on the line like that?), but he was helped by the second baseman.

Anyway, nice to see the Reds grind one out.

chandrathan has come out of the darkness and has seen a great light!

by Slyde on Jul 8, 2007 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I wonder...
If there is some way to figure out when, statistically, it is appropriate to put in Hopper as a defensive substitution for Dunn.

My sense is that making the move at any time with a lead of two runs or less is a bad one.

I think a three run lead after (note, not before) the 8th inning would probably be my "tipping point," where I would be indifferent between making the move and not.

The factors that would figure in are probably the number of ABs you think Dunn/Hopper are going to get, the difference in runs created between the two, the difference defensively (runs saved, I guess) between the two, the size of the lead, the inning and the probability the bullpen will blow the save, given the size of the lead.

I think there are too many unknowns even for the Utility Belt to handle...

Please don't trade Adam Dunn.

interesting...
Not that this lineup will ever see the field, but...

Griffey, Dunn, Hamilton, Bruce, Votto...all lefties.

Four of them could be in the same lineup this/next year, but I have to think that by the time Bruce hits The Show, Dunn and/or Griffey won't be here anymore.

Regardless, this team needs some RH hitting, which makes it even more of a shame that EdE can't get off the bench for a long enough period to find his stroke.

Opposite field
on a low fastball at 93MPH.  The ball jumped off his bat there.  I was somewhat concerned that his power wouldn't translate to MLB, but if he can hit that pitch out, he'll be fine.

Franklin Morales made Jay Bruce look baaaaaaaaad there.  Bruce has struggled with lefties in the past, and Morales is as nasty as they get.
