Game Thread: Game 84 vs. the Giants

TIME: 1:15 @ Great American

GIANTS PROBABLE:
           REDS PROBABLE:
Matt Cain (2-9, 3.38)            Matt Belisle (5-5, 5.03)

Umm... 2-9, 3.38? What? Matt Cain's a lot better than a 2-9 pitcher.

Star-divide

Baseball Reference says

Lineups

1 Hatteberg   1b
2 Phillips    2b
3 Griffey     rf
4 Dunn        lf
5 Encarnacion 3b
6 Hamilton    cf
7 Valentin     c
8 Castro      ss
9 Belisle      p

Giants
1 Roberts     cf
2 Vizquel     ss
3 Winn        rf
4 Klesko      1b
5 Durham      2b
6 Aurilia     3b
7 Lewis       lf
8 Rodriguez    c
9 Cain         p

Also, Mackanin had this to say to trent about valentin:
Pete said he was going to use Valentin to catch much more, because his bat is needed in the lineup. "He's an untapped resource that we're not using enough," Mackanin said.

wtf? where started this myth that valentin is a good hitter? Really? Career OPS+ of 81.

Winning puts us in a good/crazy mood
Also, at least Javy's OPS+ is 75 better than Juan Castro, who for some unknown reason, is starting this game.

Jesus
I missed that. Damn it all to hell. I have a shiny new quarter that says this series is his last shot at proving himself to be a productive member of this team. If not, I expect them to DFA him before the ARI series. Of course, I'm also the one who thought "Krush Groove" would be a bigger movie than "E.T."

by jch24 on Jul 4, 2007 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Ugh...
I said it last night but was afraid this would happen...

Juan Disastro was used as a pinch hitter and made an out.

Norris Hopper was used as a defensive replacement and recorded a putout.

Coutlangus was used for less than an inning.

Coffey was used for an inning plus but had only thrown 16 pitches before giving way to Weathers.

Now Juan Castro is starting this game.

I think the ghost of Jerry is managing from the clubhouse.  Next thing you know, Moeller will be back.

That which is repeated will happen a third time.

Please don't trade Adam Dunn.

You can never score too many runs via the home run.  The problem is they don't score enough runs in other ways to add to the homers.

And their pitching sucks.

I don't care how they score runs
As long as they are scoring them.  The problem is that they give up too many runs to the other team (I won't blame just the pitching because the defense should take some of the blame on that one).

The "updated" Chris Welsh Wiki entry
It looks like it's been cleaned up a little, but some fun still remains under the "Broadcasting Career" section.

Welsh was once a Rock Paper Scissor champion in the Red's clubhouse. Welsh was once a premier dodgeball player in the ADAA, being ranked number 2 for seven straight seasons. In his younger years Welsh was often seen with 1980's R&B sensation Bobby Light. The two parted ways after Light reportedly stole numerous song ideas from Welsh. During a June 24 broadcast Welsh stated that he is going to begin a rigorous work out plan to get back in ball playing shape. He plans to try out for the Cincinnati Red's in 2008. If he were to make the team, he would be a sure-fire booster of morale. Welsh is a regular guest on "Veggie Tales". Welsh is set to release a kids book in 2009. The working title as of May 2007 is "Mechanics of the Man (the Man being Me, Chris Welsh)".

Hell, some of that might even be true - I don't know!

The Bats game
Votto hit a homer in the top of the first inning.

Unfortunately, Richie Gardner then gave up back-to-back homers in the bottom of the first.  (Call him up!  He's ready!)

Jim Kelch and Matt Andrews, the Bats broadcasters, are talking about who the Reds might trade.  They say Dunn and Hatteberg would bring the most in return.  Next would be Conine and Weathers.  They think those four the prime trade bait.

Meanwhile, it's pouring rain here, so we decided to cook the steaks inside.  We set the smoke detector off trying to sear them in a cast iron pan.

Next time, I'm using this slow-roasted, no searing method.  :-P

Like what?
Are you objecting to the searing, or the slow-roasting?

"Seared crust" vs. "evenly red throughout" is right up there with Protestant vs. Catholic, Red Sox vs. Yankees, Less Filling vs. Tastes Great.  I like evenly red throughout myself.  Plus they say seared meat causes cancer.

Despite the incident with the smoke detector, the steaks turned out great.  It did alarm the neighbors a bit, when they saw the smoke pouring out the kitchen window. But they're Red Sox fans, so who cares.

I could see Weathers
and I would hate to see him go. But he might bring something good, and young in return

Yeah, but...
...think of how awful the pen would be without him. What if we can't get any outs at all, and the games never end? o_O

JCH
I've spent the last little bit finding out all I can about the party deck.

It seems cool!  Have you sat there before?

Once before....
opening day a couple of years ago. The seats aren't too bad. If you look here, the gray area on the second level right above section 135 is where they are.

The beer and food were free that day and I think that's the norm, but I can't be sure. Guess we'll know for sure in 42-43 hours. :)

According to what I read...
You get two beers, and a buffet.

You are the man!

There's an open patio area, and seats in front of it.  I assume that's where we'll be sitting!

Again you are awesome!

That's what I'd been looking at.
I'm as giddy as a school girl right now!

How'd you come up with these?

Work folk
I do them favors, they do me favors. Works out well for everyone involved, I say. It's not so bad to be a nerd in this techology-driven time of ours. :)

You must be super important!
I'm not that important, the most I've ever gotten from my "employer" is a duffle bag.

Meh
Not important so much as on good terms with the right people. I have no idea what's on the menu, usually burgers, dogs, stuff like that I think.

I absolutely love ballpark hotdogs...
I've been talking about this nonstop for two days now.

I've been told to shut up on several occasions.

Awesome
Glad to be of some service. I do it all for the kids, really. :)

I'm off to bed now, I have an incredible stretch of "no sleep for you" days starting tomorrow. I'll probably miss tomorrow's game thread, as I have to work, so I'll be in touch with you guys via email.
