Adam Dunn to the Brewers rumor

From Lance McAlister I guess, I can't track it down any better than that:

Making the rounds in the MLB rumor mill......Dunn to Brewers for Matt Wise, Tony Gwynn Jr and an infield prospect being discussed.

The only two infield prospects on the BA top 10 for the Brewers this year (apart from Ryan Braun who's not really a prospect any more) are Alcides Escobar and Mat Gamel. They were the Brewers 9th and 10th best prospects, and neither seems to be anything to get terrible excited about. Gamel has put up decent numbers, but nothing earth shattering, and Escobar doesn't seem to be able to hit.

Gwynn is a guy who's supposedly a good defensive center fielder, but he has zero power. Might put up a decent batting average and on base percentage though. Matt Wise seems to be a solid reliever, but I just can't help but cringe at this point whenever Krivsky tries to bring in relief help.

I have a hard time believing this is anything more than rumor but it's really hard to tell. I wouldn't be a fan of a deal like this, but there are probably worse ways to go.

Thank you Alan
and the Kearns, Lopez, Wagner Trade did not help us, but it didn't help Washinton that much either, though I guess small production by postion players is better than no production from two relievers. Who really thought here that brendan harris would be good when the trade happened...so I don't fault him for that

What they do in Washington doesn't matter.
Wayne's job is not to make the Nationals worse, it's to make the Reds better. Regardless of whether or not either team really benefitted all that much from The Trade, it's obvious that it significantly hurt the Reds. You don't compare the production of the players we got to the production of players we gave up with their new teams, you compare the production of the players we got with the production of the players we gave up when they were with our team. That being the case, the trade was an inexcusable rape.

As for Brendan Harris...Wayne traded for the guy in July, let him go 6 months later after he hit very, very well in Louisville. That means either Wayne didn't think he was good to start with, which means trading for him and then passing him off as a key part of the deal was a joke, or it means that Wayne is an idiot and let Harris go for nothing because he can't manage a roster. Either way, it's pathetic.

In his year and a half of GMing, Wayne has shown himself to have a single useful philosophy: Talent doesn't disappear. That enabled him to pick up Hamilton and Phillips, the two moves of his that are actually praise-worthy. The Arroyo trade has worked out nicely, but I don't think it was a case of Wayne finding a steal or anything like that, but rather a case of an obvious deal that made sense for both teams. Wayne got lucky on how good Arroyo was last year, because I really don't think he expected that when he made the deal.

by Geki on Jul 19, 2007 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah I agree with you
But when it comes to 07 who would you pick

Gonzo or Lopez at short

Griffey or Kearns at RF

haha I'm jw but I also think wayne did an OK job replacing Kearns and lopez but did an awful job "redoing the bullpen".

Hows Everyday Eddie doing? haha

"Always root for the winner. That way you won't be disappointed." -Tug McGraw

by Zach K on Jul 19, 2007 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd take Lopez over Gonzalez.
And Kearns was replaced by the Hamilton/Freel/Hopper monster, not by Griffey.

I think Felipe in GABP instead of RFK would be the superior hitter between him and Gonzalez without a doubt, and Gonzalez's defense this year really hasn't been much better than Felipe's was last year, as sad as that is. I think Felipe could fill the role of leadoff man pretty competently, which is something we need.

Hamilton by himself has obviously outplayed what Kearns did last year, but when you take into account the time he has missed and how bad the fill-in players have been, the production is about even.

And, like I've said before, it's not that he traded Kearns and Lopez, it's that he got absolutely zero value in return for Kearns and Lopez. We haven't gotten a positive contribution back from any player in that deal other than Bray's 27 mediocre innings last year -- which are more than negated by how bad Majewski has been in his appearances.

by Geki on Jul 19, 2007 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Counter
Yes. I'll give you: Phillips, Hammy, Hatte, Bronson.

However: Franklin, Stanton, Stone, McCracken, Womack, Moeller, Kim, Majewski.  I win.

Gamel and Escobar
Gamel has shown a decent bat, but in a week he's gonna be a 22-year-old powerless 3B who is still in A-ball. He doesn't have much of a defensive reputation and is, at best, a B- prospect.

The only good thing I can say about Escobar is that he has a cool name, because his bat is awful. He can't take a walk, he has no power, he's not a good basestealer despite good athleticism, and he hasn't been able to hit for average. Yuck.

If I'm trading for a Brewers prospect, I damn well better be getting Manny Parra or Will Inman to start with (both starter prospects, albeit completely different ones). After that, their system is pretty damn terrible thanks to the graduation of guys like Fielder, Braun, Hardy, Weeks, Gallardo, and Hart in recent years.

If Braun's the infield prospect

..but I would imagine that a good snarky PGA blog could be fun.

Think about it: the game threads would last for four days and it seems that between the golfers, the golf shots and the talking heads (man, does golf coverage have a lot of them or is it just me?) there would be a constant supply of material.

And Slyde could make some charts and graphs and shit.
