Bronson Arroyo on the trade market?

Bronson Arroyo

I really wouldn't understand a move like this:

Talk is getting stronger among scouts that the Reds might deal Bronson Arroyo. Wonder if the Red Sox will offer Wily Mo Peña.

Dumping good, cheap players for prospects isn't a way to get competitive quickly. Everyone should be on the table, etc. etc. I get that and I agree with it, but the price the Reds would need to get for a Bronson Arroyo deal to make sense is pretty steep.

I think alot of people think this team is oh so close to being pretty good, but I'm having a tough time not seeing it the other way around. Get rid of guys like Griffey, Dunn, and Arroyo in unsuccessful trades for prospects and all of a sudden Krivsky will have dug a Pittsburgh Pirates size hole that could take years and years to climb out of.

I'm excited for the next two weeks, because trades are fun, and I'm still a fan obviously, but I'm also pretty wary and worried because I don't have any reason to believe that the guy in charge knows what the hell he's doing. Best case scenario might be that Krivsky wildly overestimates the value of his players and doesn't get many deals done.

There's actually a fair amount of calvary coming from the minor leagues in the next year or two. It's not going to make a lot of difference if that calvary is simply replacing guys like Dunn and Arroyo. The Reds need players who are complementary to the valuable players they already possess. I really hope someone in the organization realizes that.

I wouldn't worry. Boston papers are garbage.

Well...
There was that report from that Philly paper that was picked up by SI and others:
Scouts say the Reds are alerting other clubs that everybody on their roster is available except Aaron Harang, Homer Bailey, Josh Hamilton, Alex Gonzalez and Brandon Phillips.

Interesting that the keeper list includes Harang but not Arroyo.  Though I guess Harang has been the better pitcher this year.

Me, I dread trades.  It just seems like deadline deals rarely work out.

He hasn't even hit arb yet
I think 4 more years, and he's still making the minimum.

by Geki on Jul 15, 2007 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Phillips
I believe he becomes arbitration eligible (depending on if he's a super-2 or not) this off-season, but that likely means something like $1.5 to $2M next year.  There's three years of arbitration before he's a free agent, so they have him for relatively cheap for a couple of years.

Very odd that Sea Bass is on it too...
He's been good this year... but not THAT good... he's no franchise player...

Lack of any SS
I think he's untouchable more because this organization really doesn't have anything resembling a good SS (or even middle infield) prospect in the high minors. If you ask me, Gonzalez has been bad this year and if we can get any kind of respectable return for him, I could tolerate Lopez for the rest of the season. Janish is a good defender with a good eye, but he can't do anything else at the plate. Lopez is a very streaky player but he's shown the ability to hit a little bit in the minors, though I wouldn't expect him to do it right away.

All in all, I see why Gonzalez is untouchable, I simply don't agree with it.

by Geki on Jul 16, 2007 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Bronson isn't gonna be cheap much longer
And if the organization thinks his struggles earlier this year were a result of something other than a tired arm, they should absolutely trade him.

If he's on the market, he's likely the best pitcher on the market, so if Krivsky can get a bounty for him, there's no reason not to.

by Geki on Jul 15, 2007 9:20 PM EDT reply actions

J. D. is on the money:
"The Reds need players who are complementary to the valuable players they already possess. I really hope someone in the organization realizes that."

Trades are fun in theory - exciting to fantasize over but it is rare that they make much positive difference. Especially if Krivsky is doing the trading.

I think that this team is maybe 2, 3 at the tops, players away from contending as long management finds a way to add "players who are complementary to the valuable players they already possess." Redundant, I know  - A competitive GM could make this happen. I hope Krivsky wises up fast or that Castellini wises up even faster.

Who cares?
Bronson has been a killer this year.  I think this club would be much better suited with a young gun like Dumatrait up here instead of Arroyo.  Not only has he sucked when he gets the ball, but his extra days off screw up the pitching rotation for the rest of the starters.  You know that won't be his only extra day of rest he gets this year, if he's here long enough to suck it up enough they give him one.

by redlegrulers on Jul 15, 2007 9:34 PM EDT reply actions

what?
He's had 6 bad starts out of 19.  In the other 13 starts he has gone at least 6 innings all but once (he went 5.2 that game) and he's given up 3 runs or fewer all but once (he gave up 4 runs in his first start).  He had an awful stretch where 5 out of 6 starts sucked, but it's been well documented how he was abused in the three starts prior to that stretch.

As for the extra rest, his turn in the rotation has been adjusted once, and it was during a two week stretch where the Reds had 3 off days.  He was swapped with Lohse who was pitching on his regular set of rest.  How did that screw up the rotation for the rest of the starters?

chandrathan has come out of the darkness and has seen a great light!

by Slyde on Jul 15, 2007 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

My point was...
that bronson is more trouble than he's worth.  We gave him that extension way too early, which was another horrible Krivsky move.  He is never gonna be a legit #1 starter.  His extension is going to make him horribly overpaid, much like Eric Milton.  Speaking of Milton, Arroyo has pitched just as Milton usto.  I wouldn't care if Arroyo was a #3, or 4 pitcher.  It's just that he is our number 2 pitcher and he isn't pitching like it.

I think the best move at this point is no move at all.  There is no way we get a good prospect in return for Arroyo, and by good I mean top 40 in MLB.  I think we should cut his guitar strings and hope he returns to the Bronson of old.

by redlegrulers on Jul 15, 2007 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Who Dude, don't hold back....
Bronson's not had the best year and he hasn't had the best support either. He got a lot of luck and support last year and he was this 'incredible find' this year he's had less luck and support and now he's suddenly 'shitty'. He's still pretty much the same pitcher when properly utilized. I don't buy your argument.

Some of it may come down to...
..whether or not Wayne thinks that this team has a chance to win 90 games in '08.

Do they?

If Arroyo could be traded for some quality parts... awww scratch that-

I don't think I trust Wayne to get a quality catcher and/or some other legitimate quality parts and even if he does, how in the hell could the Reds make a run at 90 wins in '09 with a starting staff of Harang and Bailey and... who?  Am I supposed to believe that Bob's gonna cut open the mattress in order to bring in a better than average free agent starting pitcher (or two)?

Am I supposed to believe that?

'Cause I doesn't.

Castellini knows that action has to taken.
Right? Right. What action is the question. From all I've gleaned with incessant recent reading of RR and other Reds related blogs, Bob is not going to open up the mattress and it would take a far sharper and nastier GM than Krivsky to pull off the kind of trade we need. We've got some good talent in AAA and AA, plus Keppinger. I guess what I'm for is going with what we already have, moving a couple Veteran Ps and bring up some of the kids and work them in. Nothing to lose - Everything to gain. Cause we ain't winnin' nothin' now. Right? Right.

I second that...
Though Castillini says he wants to win he isn't george steinbrener.  As the dude on 700 said today "Do you think Castillini is making millions selling tomatoes?"  He just doesn't have the dough.  I love Castillini as much as the next Reds fan.  I won't jump all over him because he hasn't gone for the big fish yet.  I think this offseason will be a huge test to weather Castillini is the owner we want.  I think that they should get one of the following three, Carlos Zambrano, Scott Linebrink, and/or Eric Gagne, along with a great manager.  GO REDS!!!

In addition...if you or anyone else on this site think Dunn is a player you build a team around, you should give this up.  He's terrible in the field and he's terrible in the clutch.  Bad combination.

Obviously you're infatuated with an occasional long HR.  He creates awe with his show of power, but his game has little substance if you're looking for a winning player.

I don't know if anyone
on this site thinks Dunn is a player you build around, but think he is a solid player for what they are paying him right now. Would I want pay him him 14 Millon dollars next season, no but truth is with the way the market is now a power hitter like Dunn is cheap for what he gives a small market team like the reds. He is also 27 and lets not forget David Ortiz he sucked bad with the twins but now he is one of the best hitters with runners in scoring postion in the game.

I don't know if you have to have a Pujols, A-Rod or a superstar to have a championship team. Look at the 1990 Reds, everyone was solid on that team and their might not be one hall of famer on that roster {Larkin and O'Neil maybe} but they where a great team and played well when they needed to. So lets lay off Dunner and keep hating the real problem SWEATERPANTS!!

But I Believe you build with pitching not just around one postion player, Its like how texas tried to build around A-Rod, great offense but other than Kenny Rogers they couldn't afford any other good arms. So it's nothing against Dunn but I think we have a good enough line up around hit already although I would love to see more contact hitters around him.

Dunn is a great player...
But the Reds have been awful since he's been with them.  I know it's not his fault, and that he provides a large part of the offense.  In defense of Dunn, his supporting cast has been less than spectacular.  But the problem is, as Dunn gets more expensive over the next few years, that does not correlate to the surrounding players getting better.

I'm nervous and excited
about the trade dedline but in the end I would be surprise if anyone other than Loshe gets traded, if he does it would be for a very low value. I don't know what the market is for Dunn but the 2nd best guy behind him in the market is Dye and Dunn is having a much better season than Dye. This reminds me of the situation the brewers had last season they got rid of Carlos Lee {who is a more expensive Dunn} for Kevin Mench {below average OF} and their All-Star Closer. If we could pull a trade like that {wanye won't} I would be in favor but I agree with J.D that if we gamble on prospects trading Dunn, Griff and Arroyo we could be like the dread pirates.

I believe Santana is a free agent after '08 so if the Reds aren't looking strong next July, we could flip him for just about whatever we wanted.  ("Shifting market values" be damned!)

OR....

Bob could cut open one of his matresses (here's hoping he has more than one!) and he could set our rotation up: Santana, Harang, Bailey.

Dare to dream this little dream with me and look at that rotation one more time:

ah
but there will still be rumors on the waiver wire deals, though it's unlikely that any of the big guys would make it through waivers.

What would happen to Dunn's option year...
If he were claimed off waivers, and the Reds let him go?

No idea
But does it matter?  Any contender that needs another bat would take Dunn in a heartbeat if they didn't have to give up anybody to get him, whether they control him for next season or not.

And if Krivsky let it happen and wasn't fired that same day, well, THEN I would give this all up.

A name that could have been a Red
The Brewers just called up Grant Balfour.  So far in 32 minor league games he's put up a 1.87 ERA in 43.1 innings.  His K/9 is nasty (14.1) though his BB/9 is a little higher than ideal (3.1).  Obviously there are no guarantees that he'll be good once he gets to the Majors, and I think Krivsky was doing him a favor when he waived him, but I'd have taken him over Ricky Stone any day.

Balfour was a DanO signing
Krivsky had no choice but to get rid of him, as purging the team of any players that are not his own seems to be his goal.

Of course, Balfour's an ex-Twin, so one might've hoped that would balance it out.

As for his walk rate...3.1 BB/9 isn't bad at all for a reliever, especially when your K/BB is over 4.5.

Yeah
It's not great, but I was trying not to build it up as a horrible move - Balfour was anything but a sure thing - and I didn't want it to be as much of a Krivsky bash as a note that damn, it sure would have been nice to have him still.

Possible trade....
What are we going to offer him for?  As with my contention with trading Dunn, I do not know of a single team in MLB who would think of trading a top-tiered starter to the Reds.  Are we going to trade him for a bunch of prospects?  They would have to be pretty good prospects, although I suppose with the quasi-emergence of Livingston maybe the front office thinks Bronson is expendable.
