Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Friday Quick Hits

  • Pirates fans are planning a walkout during Saturday night's game, and the team is strongarming FSN into ignoring it. There are very few franchises in all of sports that have a recent track record as bad as the Pirates, so good for those fans. I hope the walkout is huge, and hopefully someone like ESPN will cover it since FSN won't.
  • Reds minor league boxscores, updated daily. And the best part? There's an RSS feed. Very cool.
  • Trades are coming, not that that should surprise anyone. It's really obnoxious for a general manager to not comment on anything relating to transactions or the team when the team is as bad as the Reds are this year. The fans deserve Krivsky at least giving them something to talk about, and he could very easily do that without hurting himself strategically. Jim Bowden is a terrible GM, but at least he would talk to the press and make things feel a little exciting.
  • If you didn't catch it in the diary thread, go back and check out this diary from January. It's oh so tragic.
  • I'm sure you noticed the "hype this" button on the Ken Griffey Jr. post. I've started using Ballhype, kind of a Digg for sports. It's been around for a few months, and I always meant to sign up but never really got around to it until now, but it's a really cool concept. If you decide to give it a try, feel free to add me as a friend. I've also made fan groups for the Reds and Bengals, so join up, they're pretty empty at the moment. I'll be submitting stories from Red Reporter from time to time, and when I do you'll see the "hype this" button. Obviously feel free to vote for those!

sure
It's a way of finding interesting things to read essentially, or alternatively a way to promote your content, although that's more frowned up with Digg I think. Theory being that people will vote up the good stuff, and not the dull things.

Minor leagues
How long are we going to tolerate Jay Bruce and all of his strikeouts?  Can someone give me a good reason why that guy hasn't been traded yet?
I don't know why chandrathan is so mad at me. That guy is cuh-razy.

Now we know
Narron checked a red book in which he keeps what days he used relief pitchers and noted, "We used him four straight days (June 7-10), had an off day and used him the next day back. I wish we could use him every day."

In other words, Narron isn't accidently overusing his bullpen, he's actively doing it.  Good job, asshat.

just....wow.

here's an idea......
Well, he could start pitching Juan Castro.

Oof.
I just went back and read that thread.  Boy, was I down on Hamilton's potential.  I may have underestimated him.

Blue asked me question at the end that I never responded to:

(me) Not only was Harris viewed as very valuable to the organization a mere 6 months ago, and not only did he do nothing in that time to negate that value (if anything, his AAA performance should have enhanced it), but the team spent more money on the 3 C's (Castro, Conine, Crosby) than Harris would have cost to keep, and he's better than any of them.

That is my frustration with this.

(blue) Are you frustrated 1)because it seems so obvious, 2) because its a big deal, or 3) because its a symptom of a bigger problem?

Of course, my answer would have been (and still is) "Yes".

just....wow.

Where the hell is Homer's FB?
Per Lance McAlister:

K's per 9 innings
Dayton 10.85
Sarasota 10.06
Chattanooga 10.19
Louisville 7.91
Cincinnati 3.66

Dude. He's 21.
He'll come around. If you expect him to dominate up here, then you're just being unfair.

by Geki on Jun 29, 2007 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't expect him to dominate.
I read an ESPN article that said Scouts are concerned where his Velocity went.  In Sarasota last year he touched 97-98 with his Fast Ball.  This year he is in the low 90's.  Either the Reds asked him to tone it down a bit, or there is something wrong.

ive been under the impression
that hes just been working on his other pitches a lot and isnt zoned into his fastball. he's been throwing it 95, 96 though. hes fine.

not worried about him dominating
just wondering why he isn't throwing as hard... no one ever seems to talk about it. I say he's hurt.

Walkout...
If we Reds fans ever did a walkout in the middle of a game, I think we should do it with one out in the top of the eighth (assuming that the Reds' pitcher can get an out in the eighth inning).
WTF? Pinch hit Castro for Hamilton? What a Fiastro!!! Fire Narron!!!

the pirates of the non-caribbean
I'm not sure that walking out is going to do anything for them.  Does anyone think that the front office is going to get scared and start hiring competent people or spend more money on player development and/or bring in some established players?  I thought back in the early 2000's that Pittsburgh was going to turn the corner.  They've produced some good offensive players (Giles, Ramirez, Kendall, etc.), but they've never been able to replicate the development of pitching and lost most of the good hitters they had.  It makes you wonder what Jason Bay is thinking when he wakes up in the morning.  Then again, the Pirates are ahead of us in the Central, so why are we feeling sorry for them?

by tonywf on Jun 29, 2007 11:32 PM EDT reply actions

They didn't produce Giles.
He came up with the Indians and played there until he was 28.

by Geki on Jun 30, 2007 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions

i stand corrected...
And I even remember Giles when he was with the Indians.  He was much better in Pittsburgh.
