Game Thread: Game 25 vs the Pirates

TIME: 1:35 @ PNC Park

PIRATES PROBABLE:
                     REDS PROBABLE:
Paul Maholm (1-2, 3.96)                   Aaron Harang (3-0, 3.86)

The Reds hit Maholm pretty hard the first time they faced him this year, and hopefully we'll see a repeat performance today.

Go Reds!

The Reds
What you want as a ballplayer is consistancy fro your teamates, win or lose, you want everyone playing consistent ball every night, as a manager. The Rds aren't playing consistnely right now, where before they were in August and September last year. In the end, wins and losses don't mean as much as everone playing the same way, taking the same approch every game.

Hey Joe
Can you give us a prediction on where you think the Reds will end up?  Who is going to win the NL Central?

2007 Reds Threat Level is Yellow

by Slyde on Apr 29, 2007 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

NL Central
The NL Central is a really tough one for me to call. The Cardinals are coming of a World Series year and Pujols is a great hitter, but the Brewers could also be there with there young hitters. They have a great manager. The kind you need to win down the stretch. The Astros and Cubs have pretty good starting pitching. They challenge if the get hot at the plate. The Reds concern me from a ptching point of view. The unfortunate part about pitching, as you get more innings, you lost a little bit. There starters and bullpen threw alot of innings last year. I'm not sure what they have done to improve their pitching. No one knows for sure what will happen. Thats why they play the games. I'm lookign forward to a interesting year in the NL. Don't count out the Pirates.

Hey Joe
What are your thoughts on Billy Beane's new book about left tackles in football?

by teb7 on Apr 29, 2007 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Billy Beane
I haven't read the book but whenever you start thinking aboyut the game in terms of just stats like left versus right tackles or how many tackles a tackle has and not looking at where they were in the game then its just a bunch geeks playing video games. I can't say that I agree with that.

Giving Belise a shot
helped improved their pitching.  If Milton can continue to not suck, and Lohse can pitch like he has minus his last 2 innings they are in great shape.  If Eric Milton is the wosrt pitcher the Reds have that isn't bad at all, because he is capable of solid all be it unspectacular work.  I pretty much figure will Miton pitches it will be 5-6 innings of 3-4 run baseball, which will keep the Reds in the game.  Just hope he doesn't match up against too many aces.

Reds Pitching
Hey, Justin, wow it looks like you've really done your research. I have to disagree with you that Milton is the Reds worst pitcher though. Eric Milton is someone who has been around the league a while and had some great years in the Twins organization. I haven't seem him pitch this year, so I can't say for certian. Milton is definitely the sort of veteran you want on your staff to show the young guys how to get it done. You may be right.

Kenny Irons
Per our short conversation yesterday about what the Irons pick means for Chris Perry, J Kirkendall at the Cincy Jungle blog seems to think it means the end for Kenny Watson:

It seems that Kenny Irons is a shifty running back with "inconsistent" hands. Which makes me think that the Bengals may use him until Chris Perry gets healthy again. At that point, the team could let Kenny Watson go and use Perry as a third down back and use Kenny Irons as Rudi's backup during rushing downs. Come to think of it, how best to ensure Perry remains healthy but keep Rudi Johnson's work load down? I just don't see Kenny Watson being kept over Chris Perry. And you must remember, before claiming durability issues, that Kenny Watson missed the entire 2005 season.

This hasn't been discussed here that much, but Junior has some pretty serious health problems. Neither diverticulitis nor pleurisy are conditions you just get over like a cold.

Taken together with his recurring injuries, does Junior maybe have to retire during the season or after this season?

Needs to show more patience at the plate before I'd be comfortable batting him. He swings at too many pitchers outisde the strike zone. First pitch swinging can be good only if you have a good pitch to hit.

Gonzalez a very talented fielder. Shortstop is the most difficult defensive position on the field and you ahve to be aware of the game at all times. But I also like Luga a lot. He does some things for them well. I think it is unfair to call him an idiot. But I have never had a conversation with him, so I don't know one way or another on that. Double plays can be frustrating but they part of the game.

Not when you are on 3B and there's no one on 2B.  And you're out on a 2-3-1 DP because you tried to go home on a dribbler.

I will have to disagree with you. If you look over the course of a season double plays occur nearly every game. Avoiding them should be a hitters job and a baserunner has to know whats happeing around him. Those kind of guys are valuable.

by Joe Morgan on Apr 29, 2007 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I think Manny may have topped Lugo
He was running between 1B and 2B.  He froze when he saw Cano with the ball at 2B.  Cano then threw it to Minky.  Minky ran down Manny and tagged him.  Only Manny never moved.  After he stopped on the basepath, he stayed stopped.

Just Manny being Manny, I guess.

Are a very fundamental aspect of the game's fundamentals. Teams spend a lot of time working with players during Spring Training and those teams will have the most success. by teb7 on Apr 29, 2007 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

Big Inning
Sometimes big innings can be a detriment to your team. In that particular situation you have your pitcher having to hit and be a baserunner. You have to be concerned about him wearing down out there. In the long run the samrt play might have been for Encarnacion to pop a sac fly into the outfield. Which is what he tried to do. Robb's strikeout is a key thing. He's Harang's catcher and has a better idea about how to help his pitcher in that situation. I wouldn't be surpirsied to see harang struggle this inning.

Josh Hamilton
I haven't seen him play this year, so I can't really say anything about him one way or another. He has some power but you want him to have more consistancy at the plate. His average should be hire for an everyday player. It's too early to say anything definitave. I read in the paper that he's had some off the field troubles which can be a abd thing in the clubhouse. When I was with the Reds we ahd a lot of guys who kept themselves focused and out of trouble. You need that at the major league level. In my opiiions he needs more time in the minor leagues. I also have to say that I don't really understand your name. I don't think it is apporiate for kids to read on a site about baseball.

And I don't know what a compensatory selections is

Compensatory picks
Teams get them when they lose a greater number of free agents than they sign. I think they can also get them if another team signs a coach from their staff?

Strike Out Throw Out
That is one of most disappointing plays in baseball from a fan's persepctive. You have the hit and run set up to keep that sort of thing from happeining. The manager has to be disappointed there.

Brandon Phillips looked like a Reds second baseman we all know and love making that turn.

6-4-3
nice. Always good to turn one.

Hey Joe, other than Dave C, who was the best DP partner you worked with?

And should Davey be in the Hall of Fame?

by Caleb on Apr 29, 2007 3:10 PM EDT reply actions

Concepcion
Davey was the best shortstop I have ever played with and one of the best the game has ever seen. He was a great defender and a gret teammate. He should be in the Hall of Fame and it I had a vote I would put him theire. Pete should also be in the Hall of Fame in my opinion. There are a lot of wins bwteen those to players. Bench should be in there as well.

Wow, it looks like you've doee some research! I don't really read my mail, so if I can say much about that one way or another. I'll have to go back and look at that to know for sure. Thanks for reminding me of Davey.

Harang's spot up third
Do you pinch hit for him?  He's at 98 pitches, and you haven't used your bullpen in over 24 hours.  Is a five run lead enough cushion?

by Brendanukkah on Apr 29, 2007 3:23 PM EDT reply actions

i let him hit
eh, i take him out. i mean, i dont feel safe unless we have a starter in, but at some point in the season we have to expect the pen can hold a five-run lead. is salmon up yet? he'd be my guy. why not give him two inning?

Pitch Counts
I think to many coaches pay too much attention to pitch counts. To my mind, you can be too caution with your pitchers and not let them pitch which is what they do best. YOur pitcher knows he can stay out and get the job done. A good mananger makes the best decision there.

by Joe Morgan on Apr 29, 2007 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Matt Toeaina
Taking that player in that position seems like a stretch to me. He has ideal size but you have to wonder what the coach was thinking. It will be important that he sees as many major league sliders as he can next Spring. I like the pick in that situation.

by Joe Morgan on Apr 29, 2007 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

looks like
we're keeping him in there. im fine with that. i feel safer, although i hope his doesnt wear out this season

Wings
My Buzzmaster had to remind me who Wings was! I remember Cesar was a big fan of Paul McCarty though he really liked John Lennon and the Beetles as well. When you talk about Wings you have to remember that thye had a lot of talent at each position. Picking my favorite member of the band would be difficult, but I would have to go wiith Ringo.

Game Thoughts
You have to be happy with this win from a Reds perspective. The Reds going to have to score runs to win games. I would be concerned if I were Reds fan about the number of runs that resulted from a home run. That's not the most productive way to score runs over the course of a season. If your the Pirates you obviously want to cut down on the number of runs you give up, particularly limiting home runs which can put a team back in the game quickly like it did today. Neither of these teams I feel are going to be contenders in the NL but it's early so you I don't want to make a prediction yet. There's alot of basbell left to play.

by Joe Morgan on Apr 29, 2007 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

HR not most productive way to score runs?
What is a more productive way to score runs than the homerun, Joe?  On a homerun the batter "knocks himself" in.  Other types of hits can require a 2nd, 3rd or even 4th hitter to knock the original hitter in.

The homerun is the most productive way to score runs.

Joe, thanks for joining the game thread today.  Your wisdom has changed the way I look at the game.  I still think about things the way I used to but my thoughts are different.  You're the best addition to the site this year.  But it's only April, so that may not be true.

Rarest play in baseball
Not worth a diary, but just wanted to mention that Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki registered the thirteenth unassisted triple play in baseball history today. The esteemed Larry Jones, Jr. was the batter. Suck it, Larry!

by teb7 on Apr 29, 2007 7:09 PM EDT reply actions

Play Recap
From mlb.com:
In the top of the seventh inning of a tied game, with runners on first and second and nobody out, Chipper Jones hit a line drive at Tulowitzki, who snared the ball in flight, stepped on second to double up Kelly Johnson, and tagged Edgar Renteria just between first and second for an unassisted triple play.

Just to be safe, Tulowitzki fired the ball to Todd Helton at first, but three outs was sufficient on the play.
