Denorfia needs Tommy John surgery

From John Fay's blog:

Jerry Narron and Wayne Krivsky just announced the following:

--Chris Denorfia needs "Tommy John" surgery.
--Bobby Livingston and and Gary Majewski were optioned to Louisville.
--Jeff Keppinger, Bill Bray and Elizardo Ramirez go on the DL and will rehab in the Floirda.
--Jerry Gil, Denorfia and Eddie Guardado go on the DL and come north with the team.
--Either Matt Belisle or Kirk Saarloos will be the fifth starter.
--The last position player will be Norris Hopper or Chad Moeller.
--The last relief positions will go to a two of these three: Victor Santos, Jon Courlangus or Jared Burton.

Too bad for Deno. Although I like that Burton and Coutlangus might make the team

it's kind of unnerving
They said his arm hurt, but it wasn't considered serious.  Now he's getting Tommy John surgery.  Did they really not know how serious it was, or were they keeping it quiet, even though they suspected it could be bad?

It's not just Reds fandom
Last week, Yankees ace Chien-Ming Wang had "a cramp" while working out.  A day or two later, we find out it's a hamstring strain, and he'll be out at least a month.

Early last season, pitcher Darrel Rasner had some arm soreness while working out.  It wasn't serious; they weren't even going to put him on the DL.  He ended up missing almost the entire season with tendinitis.

Denorfia
Suppose he thinks ST is too long? He hurt his arm last Friday.

That sucks.
I'd rather have Crosby than Hopper or Moeller. And I'd much rather have Deno than all of them.

That said, I'm happy with Coutlangus and Jared Burton on the team. We need some damn youth, even if it means a few more losses this year.

by Geki on Mar 29, 2007 4:13 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i would prefer
santos and coutlangus, sending burton back to oakland.

wow, norris hopper is one spot away from making this team. that is hard for me to believe.

no matter, it's going to be another effing 3-catcher summer. jesus christ.

Absolutely
Moeller's making the team regardless

But kDog wakes up every morning and eats the same breakfast after putting on the same sweater, day in, day out. Why would he change now? He's not given to pants made from animals, alcoholic blowouts with his skank, and general erratic behavior. Moeller makes the team or i'm a baby harang's uncle

Moller Sucks
but hes going to make the team

by OURob on Mar 29, 2007 6:32 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree
And I think it was going to be Moeller even before Deno got hurt.

To be fair, Moeller's had a pretty good spring training.

To be fair
In his previous 1200+ regular season plate appearances, Chad Moeller has sucked out loud.

2007 Reds Threat Level is Yellow

And...
He has sucked more than Coutlangus, who really deserves the roster spot.

by Paul Householder on Mar 29, 2007 7:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I hope Coutlangus makes the team
But he was never in competition with Moeller.  They were never going to carry 13 pitchers.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named "Bubba"?

by BubbaFan on Mar 29, 2007 7:21 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Although...
Coutlangus must have sucked before also, just not as much as Moeller.

I think, though, that once Dick Pole got involved with Coutlangus, he stopped.

Slyde, do you have any thoughts on this?

Don't mind me...just thinking positive and pitching to contact, that's all...

by Paul Householder on Mar 29, 2007 7:28 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well
I've always felt that Coutlangus would be a good test for Dick Pole.  If Coutlangus succeeds then Dick Pole will be able to slide right in to the pitching coach position.  However, if Coutlangus fails, then Dick Pole might as pack up and go home because his day is done.

What I don't get is that it is unlike a Moeller man to block Coutlangus.  I've got to say that I'm baffled on this one.

Not with as much as he is drug tested
I know he is being tested for Cocaine, but steriods would show up too i would think.  Plus he is naturally strong.  He hasn't really added to his body, he didn't pull a Sammy Sosa.

HGH
I don't think Hamilton's on HGH.  I hope he's learned his lesson about drugs of all kinds.

But yeah, HGH is undetectable, at least so far.  And it sounds like something that would really help a baseball player.  Not only does it build muscle, it improves your eyesight.  Some people who use it say they don't need their glasses any more.  I would imagine sharper vision would be a huge help to a batter.

It sure seemed to help Gary Matthews Jr.  :-P

Sucks for Deno
I agree that he's more valuable to the team than Hopper.  But I'd also rather see Hopper come up with the team than Moeller.  On days when he plays, he has the bat control that everyone wants in #2 hitter.

I think Burton should definitely get one of the spots in the 'pen.  He's certainly earned the right to get the Hamilton treatment.  The club can afford to give him a run at least through April and see how he does in the Show.  I would take Santos too.  Much as everyone enjoys Coutlangus, I think we can put him off a little longer.

Is any other team going with three C's this season?

by obc on Mar 29, 2007 6:01 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What are the last pen spots?
Weathers, Stanton, CormierBLAH, Coffey...I guess it means no Hermanson?  That's shocking.  Even more shocking that all three of the candidates are young guys.  Actually, a lot of this is shocking - Deno, Hopper/Moeller... I really thought we would not carry three catchers, like Wayno finally was going to get it right.  But Narron had hinted at making Milton number 5, so it's VERY disappointing that Belisle and Saarloos are up for that spot instead of 3rd or 4th.

When Bray and/or Majewski get back, my guess is that Cormier will be gone.

Are we there yet?

by Daedalus on Mar 29, 2007 7:13 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

there
should still be room for hermanson...

(copied from kyle's diary and altered to suit the day's events)
Rotation (5)
1  Harang
2  Arroyo
3  Lohse
4  Belisle
5  Milton

Bullpen (7)
1  Coffey
2  Weathers
3  Hermanson
4  Stanton
5  Cormier
6  Saarloos
7  Coutlangus, Burton or Santos

Catchers (3)
1 Ross
2 Valentin
3 Moeller

Infielders (6)
1 Encarnacion
2 Phillips
3 Gonzalez
4 Hatteberg
5 Conine
6 Castro

Outfield  (4)
1  Dunn
2  Freel
3  Griffey
4  Hamilton

I still say go with 13 pitchers this early, since quite a few of them could show promise. But that won't happen. Moeller's presence will squeeze Santos and Coutlangus, probably.

And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make.

by boobs on Mar 29, 2007 7:22 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

but...
...Fay says two out of Coutlangus, Burton or Santos will make the team.

Does that mean either Saarloos or Belisle doesn't?

Livingston Should be on this Team
It is a shame to see him go down, no one can tell me Milty is better.
Matt Belisle over Kirk Saarloos, please.
Deno being gone for the for-seeable future makes the argument that Hopper should be on this team, esp over tooth-ake, come on. Jon Courlangus and Jared Burton for the bullpen. And can anyone tell me why Gil is not with the Bats yet? wouldn't he be the starting 3rd baseman down there?
GO REDS!

by ewquinn on Mar 29, 2007 11:46 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He didn't make it because.....
"Livingston's numbers compared far more favorably than fellow lefty Eric Milton (6.59 ERA), who was already locked into either the third or fourth spot. But there was little chance of Livingston displacing Milton, who is making $9 million this season. Milton is also an experienced veteran while Livingston has only three big-league games under his belt without a win." -mlb.com

he is young and cheap!

I am guessing LIvingston will be up in short order.  IF milton takes a little time to falter, we may see Homer Bailey.
