Adam Dunn Interviewed By Houston Blog

Adam Dunn might give the best interview in baseball, and quotes like this one show why:
Sampson: What pitch do you struggle with the most?Dunn: I would say like most hitters in the league would say, fastball right down the middle.
Or this:
Chronicle: Nolan Ryan or Roger Clemens? Who was the greatest pitcher to wear an Astros uniform?Dunn: Charlie Kerfield
Make sure to check out the rest of the interview, its a good one.

Kerfeld on Kerfeld
"I like to chew tobacco and see how dirty I can get the uniform. I spit all over myself. When I come into the game batters say, 'Hey, look at that hog with spit all over him. He can't get anybody out.' That's what I want them to think." - Charlie Kerfeld

I have stuck up for Dunn a lot in other forums. but this raises two problems for me:
- Look at his jowls in that pic. I don't care about the Ks; I care a lot about conditioning, and I think Dunn fails in that area.
- I am old enough to remember Kerfeld. He was and is funny; he was also a talented guy who got fat and seemed to care more about clowning than about being the best pitcher he could be. As Bill James once said, star players and clowning generally don't mix. Dunn does not have the personality of a star.

I'm not a huge Dunn fan, but...such as???
Lack of growth as a hitter
Like I said, I have stuck up for him, I don't care about the Ks, and I don't favor trading him.
But I think he should stay in better shape, and should be improving, or at least maintaining, rather than regressing, at the plate. And, I think the jovial-bumpkin-with-the media thing is part of why he is not in shape. If I were running the team, I would build him up in the press, rather than tearing him down. In private, I would get on his ass--in a positive way--about conditioning. Griffey, Dunn and Kearns have all had issues with conditioning, IMO, and it has hurt the team, as has the Reds' stupid need to focus on Dunn's Ks instead of on his power.
