Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Game Thread: Game 1 vs. the Cubs

TIME: 2:10 @ Great American Ball Park

REDS PROBABLE:
                 CUBS PROBABLE:
Aaron Harang (0-0, 0.00)       Carlos Zambrano (0-0, 0.00)

Opening Day is like when you hold your breath for a really long time, and you don't even realize you're not breathing, and then finally you realize and you take a breath and it feels so good. Opening Day is that breath.

Game talk goes here. I hate the Cubs.

Leading off...Tony Womack
I'm normally an optimist, but it's a really ominous sign when the worst offensive player in baseball (Cristian Guzman's hurt) is starting out the season. Maybe he'll pull a Joe Randa...

by teb7 on Apr 3, 2006 2:03 PM EDT reply actions

Ugh...
Hearing Tony Womack's name over the loudspeaker almost drained my enthusiasm for the season.

Dunner... He'll make up for it with the bat. I can feel it.

Wombat
Freel on second and that's a triple play.

I need new glasses
Because it looks like Joey Hamilton is pitching today. That can't be, right?

Bad for my heart.
I thought it was out.

Encarnacion
looked overmatched on that last swing. Until I see otherwise, I'll hope it's just opening day jitters.

Dammit!!!!
Dammit!!!!

So close....
Either these are opening inning jitters from both pitchers, or we'll end up with a 10-9 final. Matt Murton is my new least favorite human.

Zambrano Pitches like Crap
Still we can not score.Lets move Dunn to first where he can not hurt us that bad lol.Hatteburg and Womack draw walks.

by gnarley on Apr 3, 2006 2:49 PM EDT reply actions

Dunn at 1st
Would prevent him from running over the shortstop.

One two three second for Harang. This could settle down and not be so embarassing.

Defence
Are D is so bad and there D is awesome this sucks.

by gnarley on Apr 3, 2006 2:56 PM EDT reply actions

Womack
Like I said all along is better then Freel. He will do a nice job.He barely played for the Yanks give him a chance.

by gnarley on Apr 3, 2006 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

Womack
starting in June at a ballpark near you.

by jprose on Apr 3, 2006 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

A Great Start
A 5-run first.
MLB.com has boffoed GameDay so I can't listen. (Wait, that might be a good thing.)
Bases loaded, no outs, 1 run?

All I want is a 50-win season. Is that doable?

by Senor Pez on Apr 3, 2006 3:04 PM EDT reply actions

I love Part 2
I love pressing Enter before I'm ready.

So...I WAS listening to the game before MLB.com and/or my laptop crapped out.  And now I'm locked out of GameDay Audio.  I want to hear Marty tell me how good Womack looks.  And about Hatteberg's professional atbats.  And I missed Dunn's SF.  What a day.

by Dubman on Apr 3, 2006 3:04 PM EDT reply actions

Harang is picking it up.
Harang reitres 7 in a row.Womack is 1-1 with a double he also walked in the first and scored are only run.

by gnarley on Apr 3, 2006 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

Dunn
Base hit

by gnarley on Apr 3, 2006 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

Prediction
Hatteburg gets walked on this at bat loads them up for Kearns who strikes out.

by gnarley on Apr 3, 2006 3:11 PM EDT reply actions

I predict
Dunn leads the league in BA.  and SF's.

by Dubman on Apr 3, 2006 3:11 PM EDT reply actions

Hatteburg HR
He had some power on that one.

by gnarley on Apr 3, 2006 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

Hatteburg
Randa-Hatteburg-Randa........It's all the same.

Hatteberg!
starting in June ... Home Run! Savor it now, Hatty!

by jprose on Apr 3, 2006 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

My bad
2 runs scored

by gnarley on Apr 3, 2006 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

Um....
So I think there's a anti-stathead conspiracy to get Womack and Hatteberg to win the game for the Reds today and get them signed to 5 year $50 million deals.

by teb7 on Apr 3, 2006 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

Do you guys remember when Kearns was good?
It's been awhile. For all the talk of not trading Casey at peak value, I think the holding onto Kearns may have been this franchises undoing.

by jprose on Apr 3, 2006 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

They're worth it.
Look at the year they're having!!!

by Dubman on Apr 3, 2006 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

Nice play by Encarnacion
I'm really glad this kid is getting a fair chance.

by jprose on Apr 3, 2006 3:34 PM EDT reply actions

Secret Service
I'm glad they're around to catch the ground rule doubles. That was funny.

Harang
is doing a great job after an awful first inning. He's adjusted to the small strike zone very well. I like this guy.

by jprose on Apr 3, 2006 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

Dunn
way to get that error back.

by jprose on Apr 3, 2006 3:45 PM EDT reply actions

MLB Audio
Is anyone else having a difficult time listening to the game on MLB Audio? I've given up after it cut out for the 5th time. Gamecast for me...

by teb7 on Apr 3, 2006 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

MLB Audio
Mine worked fine until the Reds took the field.  Then it cut out, and I got a bunch of error messages and then I got locked out for logging in too many times.  there's also a message on the MLB.com saying there're tech problems.

by Dubman on Apr 3, 2006 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Good job MLB
Way to keep the customer base happy

by teb7 on Apr 3, 2006 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Troubles here too
Mine cut out just before the ceremonial first pitch.  After a lot of hitting the play button, it started going again after four innings.  It just cut out right after Nuxhall came in, crapped out for another 5 minutes, and now it just came back again as the Cubs broke the tie.  But I haven't been locked out yet.

by DevilsAdvocate on Apr 3, 2006 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Same Problem Here
Why bother prepare for the server loads that you are bound to experience on Opening Day? The site is slower, more cluttered, and harder to navigate than it was last year. There's no way to choose your media player preference, and the "skin" they use on the media player prevents you from seeing whatever type of error is preventing the stream from playing.

At least the lame "Boss Button" on the player works. What a waste of resources.

by Senor Pez on Apr 3, 2006 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I"m back in
just in time to hear that the cubs are up 7-5.

by Dubman on Apr 3, 2006 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Now I"m out again
And I'm not coming back.  Till tomorrow at least.

by Dubman on Apr 3, 2006 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Dunn
makes up for that homerun with another error (hit? really?).

by jprose on Apr 3, 2006 4:07 PM EDT reply actions

Dunn
Wow. The haters have a lot of ammunition after this game.

by Red Menace on Apr 3, 2006 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah.
Michael is making man love to his t.v. right now.

hey sukr, ... unfortunately I was having to be productive @ work most of the time. But as soon as I get this mlb.tv situation straightened out I'll be watching archived game with a bowl of popcorn, lights dimmed and all the doors locked !!
Enough with the Homeruns and Strikeouts

Dunn
that makes up for the rest of my faith in the Reds today. I'll be back sometime in the future.

Bye.

by jprose on Apr 3, 2006 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

not yet
First the Reds get to try and get back some of the seven runs they gave up in the top of the inning.  There's one...they sure have hit a lot of deep flyballs today, only to be caught.

by DevilsAdvocate on Apr 3, 2006 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I think moving Dunn from first
Really improved the defense all right.
Don't mind me...just pitching to contact, that's all...

Radio Announcers
Just to take a break from complaining about the delivery (mlb.com), to talk about the substance (WLW):

You know, I've griped plenty about Marty Brenneman before.  Causes have included his negativity, his sniping about certain players or the right way to play, or his fawning over certain public figures whom are not exactly on my top-5 favorite people list.  But the radio difficulties with MLB.com today forced me to resort to clicking on the Cubs feed towards the end of the game, and my goodness, do I ever thank my lucky stars for Marty, Steve, and Joe after listening to WGN for just 5 minutes.

by DevilsAdvocate on Apr 3, 2006 5:57 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed
I'd rather listen to dead air than listen to some of the other radio announcers other there. The only other one that I can stomach is the Brewers' Bob Uecker, and I think that's only because it's what I grew up with.

Amusingly enough, now that the game is over, I can get GameDay Audio. Convienent. Maybe I'll listen to the game archive and hope it turns out differently.

It's going to be a long 2006 for sports. Reds baseball. Packers pro football. Purdue & Wisconsin college football. Do I know how to pick 'em, or what?

by Senor Pez on Apr 3, 2006 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Likewise
Try Reds baseball, Knicks basketball, Bills football, Northwestern college sports and Aston Villa soccer.

One championship in my lifetime (thank God for the Wire to Wire VHS), and more painfully, 6 championship losses.

I'm Tyler. I was a south campus arts dweeb and American Studies major. If you happened to see the Radiohead cover show at Jones in Spring 2002 or the Laramie Project in the Louis Room in Spring 2003, then you saw me playing guitar. Oh, and I took human sexuality with Bailey.
