Womack - Hitler references, poll and discussion

So I'll just reprint what I said in reply to Doc Scott:

"I know what you're saying, but I think the references are pretty tongue in cheek. Whether that makes it ok or not I don't know, but I generally find it amusing.

But be that as it may, I'm going to open a thread about it in the diaries to see what people think, and I'll let you guys decide."

So yeah, vote and decide. And discuss it if you like.

This is pretty similar to this thread over on RedsZone, which I found ridiculous. Yes topics get beat into the ground, but these are public figures we're talking about. And if they say something stupid like OBP doesn't matter, or complain about playing time when someone better took their position, or whatever, then maybe that dead horse needs beaten some more.

But anyway, that's just my opinion. Let me know yours.

Yeah...
I figured this was on it's way eventually. If nothing else the sheer number is probably tiresome. My prepared excuse has always been that I get them confused because they both suck. Doc's points are valid. I'll await the results of the poll and regardless, at least cut back.

I'm not posting during game threads this week because of work.

No.
Listen, the comparisons aren't about Womack being like Hitler.  They're tongue in cheek because they're about OURSELVES.  They are intended to express the fact that we understand that we have started somewhat of a witch hunt, and our dislike may not be the most rational.  They're not about Tony Womack himself.

Hitler jokes are never funny, unless you are taking a shot at yourself for making them.  That's what is going on here.

I don't know any other way to explain it, but I can't believe some people actually thought the comparison was about Womack himself.

Couldn't have said it better myself
To me, the references were always a clear satire of baseball fans (I'm thinking in the direction of Red Sox/Yankees fans) who take their likes/dislikes of players to irrational extremes.

Obviously, if people want it to stop it should stop, but I hope everyone recognizes that this is a lampoon situation.

I kind of like the Napoleon idea because of the height thing, but frankly that's just swapping one dictator responsible for the deaths of millions with another...

Ditto.
That was dead on.

I'd like to file the offended under the "Puhleeez" category, but my Grandma was in a camp for about 6 months at the end of the war, so I know some people are touchy about this. But then again, sometimes too touchy without a right to be. They go through life deciding for others how they should interact with society, just because. This has been funny, and nobody has been overboard or insensitive.

Technically, it was a Neville Chamberlin joke
But come one. Anyone with any sense can recognize that the fun was being poked at fans who see the apocalypse (or Womackalypse, as I believe i called it) in every lineup card. If we can't have a little fun at our own expense, then what's the point of being a fan. The idea that anyone took seriously a comparison between a second basemen (however lousy) and Hitler is ludicrous.

Any it's not true that there's no such thing as a funny Hitler joke. Go watch the Producers, for God's sake. Very possibly, the funniest joke EVER was a Hitler joke.

I didn't see The Producers,
But I think Hitler has become such a beaten topic that, offensive or not, jokes about him aren't that funny.  To paraphrase a sarcastic Sarah Silverman joke:  "I make fun of Hitler . . . because I'm edgy"

How about...
Ayman Ottomatikowt... because he is.  He had been fine until today.  Today was terrible.

Womack
I am not condemming or judging here.
While I am certainly not above a good joke, or clever nickname in this case, I'm not sure I like a Hitler reference applied to anyone.

I'm sure that someone can come up with a better nickname.

And as far as Hitler jokes and references go find Dan St. Paul's stand up routine (try bob and tom's website) about the Heaven and Hell all star game. Now that is some funny stuff.

Probably?
You know, I understand the point that the Womack references are trying to make, but maybe they should be stopped because they just aren't funny anymore.

It's kinda like that great bumper sticker that you read...the first time, it's funny as hell, you get a laugh out of it the second and third times. By the fourth time it's down to a chuckle.

By the five thousandth, you are actively rolling your eyes and probably starting to make fun of the person who has it on their car.

But maybe that's just me and might explain why I don't have bumper stickers on my car.
