Jerry Narron vs. Rich Aurilia

Jerry Narron

It didn't take long for dirt to start coming out on the 2006 season.

Lance McAlister has this about Narron and Rich Aurilia:

Seems Jerry and Rich Aurilia went nose to nose with a week left in the season, and things got "pretty ugly". Rich told those that saw it, he wasn't coming back if Jerry was in charge in 2007

Rheal Cormier also apparently wasn't happy with the way he was used:

Rheal Cormier and Jerry had words in the final week of the season over Rheal's role.
The Reds told Rheal from the start that he would only throw in close games when the game was on the line....but through most of the season, they used him all over. Then, with two weeks left, Jerry went up to him and said, sorry we have used you all over, the last two weeks, you will only throw when the game is on the line. The very next day, they got him hot in the pen with a 7 run lead or something. He went nuts on Jerry too.

I can't really blame him there. I'm sure some people will say this is much ado about nothing, but if it's true I think it really signifies something. The number one hallmark of bad management, in sports or otherwise, is poor communication.

Combine all of this with this tidbit from a Mark Sheldon mailbag:

With so many guys coming in during the season, a lack of clubhouse leadership was exposed in my opinion. Some new additions felt hesitant to speak up on clubhouse issues they found troubling, especially during the late season slide.

The most important part of that statement is just the admission that there were clubhouse issues at the end of the season, something I don't find terribly surprising. It'd be tough not to have troubles with the August/September that the Reds had.

Here's the question I have after reading all of this: if Jerry Narron isn't good for the clubhouse then what good is he? He's a terrible in game manager. You combine that with a veteran (and by all accounts a respected vet) saying that he won't play for him again ... and I think you've got some problems.

I don't know where Krivsky goes from here (if this is true I could see him just ignoring it since Aurilia is likely to leave anyway), but I think he'd do well to at least consider some alternatives.

This is good news!
Anything like this gets us closer to a new manager.  I heard Joe Girardi is available...

I'm out
It's probably an exaggeration to say I defended Narron around here, but my contention that in-game strategy palls in importance compared to maintaining a clubhouse vibe was as good a compliment as he received at some points last summer. Now I'm out. He's not bringing anything to the table. Lacking any stories like these I assumed things were well. But Cincinnati reporters are kind of old fashioned in that they would wait until the season ended to reveal this. I suspect they're also understating things. Having lived in Chicago and LA, I can say Mark's aside would have been dynamite in the hands of hacks like Mariotti and Plashke.

trouble in paradise
Not suprised that Aurilia went head to head with Narron. The Bad Man really was the leader in September and probably showed it more than any one else.

For some reason I have a problem with the whole Cormier thing. Who is this guy to "throw in close games when the game was on the line" and why in the world would the Reds tell him that and why would he expect that?

Marty asked Krivsky what the fate of the coaching staff was during the final game. We still do not know but I think, if these articles are any indication, we wil be seeing some new faces very soon.

Narron has to go...
His manegerial decisions are pathetic and this rift with Aurilia is the last straw!  Rich was the most productive part of the offense the last part of the season.  We can't afford to lose him.  Naron we can!   Give him some other assignment, but get him out of the dugout!

Wow.
Perhaps we should resurrect the "sneak attack" poll by boohiss.

I think we can now all answer "strongly yes" regarding whether we ourselves could manage better than Morron, since now it is becoming clear that he can't handle the "people" aspects of managing too.

What were Jerry and Rich arguing about?
The only thing I can imagine is that Rich didn't want to play and Narron thought he should.

Reds and Jerry
There are several good managerial candidates out there and it would be a shame if the Reds missed out by keeping Narron.  I think the first step toward playing championship baseball is getting a championship caliber manager.  For a team that is so worried about who is going to announce they don't seem concerned about the guy that really calls the games.

My buddy Chris brought this
up to me tonight. My initial reaction was one of disbelief, and then I kinda started to realize "duh, this is Jerry..." If this doesn't cause Castellini some sleepless nights, I don't know what will. I'm one of the people here that went from questioning Rich Aurilia's presence in the lineup to /desiring/ it. I like Aurilia. I think he was a major part of getting this team as far as it went this season with all of "The Trade" crap, etc. that went on. What is the option for 2007? $2 million? Wouldn't that make him cheaper than Rheal Freakin' Cormier? I mean, come on. Aurilia seems like a pro - if he's got a problem with Narron, then something is wrong with Narron. I am so troubled right now by the prospect of a 2007 Reds team led by Jerry Narron that is minus an Adam Dunn who has been traded for a closer or some prospects. Troubled.

At least...
Narron & Aurilia were professional enough to keep the clubhouse from devolving into a fight club a la John the Gibbon in Toronto, although I still contend that Shea Hillenbrand is an ass for posting "The ship is sinking!" on the clubhouse bulletin board.
More, more, more ....... how do you like it?

by Gapper on Oct 11, 2006 1:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Great.
So now we're gonna end up with Narron still in charge of said clubhouse and the last of our veteran leadership and a lot of our offense gone elsewhere.

Last season it was freaking massage chairs, this season it's this. When are we going to get a major league manager in here?

Shooting from the hip
All of you seem to have convicted Narron on this issue.  Last year we all were down on Aurilla because he wouldn't keep his mouth shut about not having a starting roll.  He was nicknamed "The Bad Man".  Everybody hated it when he started and Miley or Narron was the goat when Aurilla played.  Now all of the sudden everybody is on Aurilla's side without even finding out what the fight was about or who was in the wrong.  I don't like Narron.  Never have.  But everyone deserves his day in court.  Before we convict him.  Let's find out what happened.

They of course should fire him and hire a real manager.

I Imagine they day they got into it
was the 6-Error Crapfest on 9-23, when Jerry played McWise and Olmedo who both stunk it up, especially Olmedo.  He was awful that night.  I think several of us saw that in person.

Fire Narron because of Aurilia
No WAY can you fire Narron because of an (alleged) threat from Aurilia.  You do that now and suddenly you have the players telling management what to do.  That is no way to run a successful organization.

Be fair now...
He does know how to fill out a lineup card, and when Dung helps him, he can even do alternating patterns in the little boxes or make words with the first letters in the names of the players.

I don't think anyone wants
to fire Narron because of Aurilia. Aurilia is merely the proverbial straw. This is a season's worth of frustration talking for some people.

Replace Narron with Aurillia
Who here wouldn't rather see Aurillia as manager instead of Narron.

Besides, its time MLB had another player/manager.

HIRE AURILLIA !!!

isn't that what basically happened with Miley?

Sean Casey
Is there anyone that thinks the trade with Casey, with all this coming out, is coincidence? He may not be the best first baseman we've had -- Hal Morris baby! But man, Casey kept that clubhouse together.
