Kearns to the Yankees?
RedsZone has someone with "connections" posting that an Austin Kearns to the Yankees for Cano and Wang deal is imminent. Or possibly a three team deal involving Kearns and the Yanks.
What do you think? I think it's a terrible idea personally, but that's just because I think Oakland, at the very least, would find Kearns to be more valuable than that.
Use this thread to discuss trade ideas, opinions, etc. If any roster moves take place today you can discuss them here as well (or make a diary!). I'm out for the day, be back tomorrow morning, hopefully to find that the Reds have made a flurry of brilliant moves.

On first glance, I like it. Solid prospects. Good numbers. Solves one of the Reds big problems. Puts Pena in the game.
I've always felt that Kearns was the odd man out in this mess. If Griffey could be sold, misplaced, kidnapped or otherwise convinced to go to the AL, then Kearns is worth keeping, but I'm one of those people who think Pena is worth a ton of offense to this team.
Of course, at this point, I would take two little leaguers and a Golden Retriever for Danny Graves, with negotiation possible on the Retriever.

Kearns
Can you imagine a rotation including Bong and Wang in Cincinnati?
Wang's stats don't look that impressive to me.

Robinson Cano looks like the dominican version of William Bergolla, except Bergolla has hit better through the minors.
It's likely Kearns may figure out how to make some contact over in that softball league they call the AL. I give the Yankees the edge in this deal (in my opinion).

ohhkayyy
Reds give up a 24 year old with MVP talent who was tearing up the league two years ago before Ray King flopped on him.
Reds get a 2nd baseman...don't they already have two fairly decent options there?
And Reds get a pitcher who has never been considered any type of prospect (even in New York!), but just came off a pretty good start.
I guess Dan might just be following the old adage: Sell low, buy high. That is how that goes, right?
If they make this deal, I may have to stop following/caring for awhile.

I have two words
Do not make this deal
Terrible
NO. NO. NO. NO.
I'm watching Wang right now
Has a slider that is between 81-85 but not much bite. Not a plus pitch. If located well it is effective, but certainly not an out pitch.
The last pitch I saw he jacked up a fastball to 94, but thats by far the hardest I've seen him through.
We should not give up Kearns for him. He's at best a 5 starter, even in our rotation.
Kearns or Casey
If we deal Kearns we better fill a need with a player ready to contribute and with All Star potential. After suffering through Aurelia and the apparent lack of faith in the organization in Lopez, I'd be looking for a SS. The Red Sox have Hanley Ramirez and Renteria blocking him for the next several years. It would be great to get a quality young pitcher (A Dan Haren type), but I don't have any faith in the organization's ability to recognize one if offered.
Regardless, we should wait until we are closer to the deadline to be making the big move, and get more than we would get now. Trading Austin when he is hitting 230 is silly.
I would also explore moving Casey before I traded Kearns. You might as well take the heat when everyone is hating the team anyway, but I would prefer to get some value for him while we can, because by next year he won't have any. The Mets are looking for a 1B, and there have to be other contenders where he would help. With only one more year, the contract is not a huge barrier. OF defense gets better (particularly if Jr. moves to a corner) and WMP is in the lineup every day (also balances out the lineup a little).
We all love the guy, but sometimes you have to choose between player loyalty and what's best for the team.

Wait 'till next year
Trade Randa at the trade deadline and call up EdE. Doubt anyone would take Jimenez.
Also trade Milton (if you can find any takers--maybe the Dodgers, Tigers, Mariners or Giants if they are in the race, since all play in pitcher's parks). That one was a mistake. I would rather have signed Odalis Perez for the same price.
See if anyone will take Paul Wilson also. Signing him to a three year contract is Jimmy Haynes part II. High WHIP, high opponents' OPS with 11 wins last year means he was getting lucky, and luck tends to run out in the major leagues. It may be too late now, of course, because his ERA of 5+ is around where I would expect it with his WHIP and K/IP ratio. This is another case of buy high and sell low. The Reds could have unloaded him at midseason last year, when he was pitching decently, but they chose to hold on to him.
Graves's contract rolls off the books this year, as does Ortiz's and Jimenez's. See if anyone's closer gets injured and will take on Graves for a bucket of baseballs and a player to be named later (even Paul Householder, Wayne Krenchicki, Dann Bilardello or Dave van Gorder). Put the money into Adam Dunn and extend Pena early.
Weathers should be exiled to Siberia to count trees and paint rocks.

Still waitin'
I like Wilson. A real pro's pro, but he's no No. 1. I thought the multi year contract was too much (even if the dollars aren't that many). The one player you mention that I'm still taking a wait and see approach with is Ortiz. I'm willing to overlook the last start (coming back from injury), but he needs to get it on track to win my full support.
If I'm an MLB GM, you can't pay me enough to take Jimenez.

Wait till Next Year..
- I think most Reds fans would not be angered by a 2005 fire sale for the basic understanding there is much more affordable, young productive talent out there available via trade. Milton and Randa (headed for LA or Minnesota in a trade)it seems were signed for the explicit purpose of acquiring prospects. Not a bad idea if you think about it.
- Our farm system is better equipped than it was in the 2003 purge. At the least, Encarnacion, Bergolla, Gardener, Pauley, Bailey, Kelly and Coffey give indication to better minor league depth in AAA and AA.
- This year's June Amateur draft takes on greater significance in selecting a fast track, ML ready college arms.
